California
The Solano Community Foundation has announced grants totaling $65,642 to thirteen nonprofits based in Solano County. Eight organizations — including the Fairfield Police Activities League, Dixon Family Services, and Sustainable Solano — were awarded general operating support through the foundation's Nonprofit Partnership Program Fund, while Benicia Community Action Council and the Humane Society of the North Bay received funding for homeless programs. Three others received program support, including the Dreamcatchers Empowerment Network.
Florida
The Gulf Coast Community Foundation has announced three grants totaling $67,000 from the Miriam P. Raines Charitable Fund, an endowment created to help women in Charlotte County help themselves by furthering their life skills. Grant recipients include the Gulf Coast Partnership, which was awarded $22,000 to help provide safe housing to women experiencing homelessness; United Way of Charlotte County, which will receive $25,000 to help low-income female-headed households access a range of services; and the Virginia B. Andes Volunteer Community Clinic, which was awarded $20,000 to expand access to health care for uninsured older women in the region.
Massachusetts
The Boston Foundation has announced grants totaling $5.9 million in the areas of community improvement and development, education, housing, human services, and workforce development. The foundation board approved discretionary grants totaling nearly $2.64 million to twenty-nine organizations in this funding cycle — including a $350,000 grant to SkillWorks, a $200,000 grant to Housing Navigator Massachusetts, and a $100,000 grant to Entrepreneurship for All — in addition to $3.24 million in discretionary grants paid out through other programs.
Missouri
The Community Foundation of Northwest Missouri has awarded a $5,000 grant to the Livingston County Commission for recovery efforts following the historic flooding in May as well as ongoing flooding in the county, the Chillicothe News reports. The funds were donated to the foundation by a donor from Illinois who wishes to remain anonymous.
New Hampshire
The New Hampshire Charitable Foundation has announced grants totaling $289,435 in support of place-based ecology education programs across New Hampshire and Vermont's Upper Valley region. Awarded through the foundation's Wellborn Ecology Fund, the grants will provide opportunities for hands-on nature study, increase students' knowledge of local ecosystems, nurture future stewards of the local environment, and create connections between community members, schools, and local organizations. The fund also awarded a grant to the Upper Valley Teaching Place Collaborative, through which experts in place-based ecology education help educators and administrators incorporate ecology education into their curricula.
Pennsylvania
The Philadelphia Foundation has announced the appointment of Melissa Squarcia Fordyce as executive director of marketing and communications. Most recently, Fordyce served as director of communications for Presby's Inspired Life, a local senior living community nonprofit.
Vermont
The J. Warren & Lois McClure Foundation, a supporting organization of the Vermont Community Foundation, has appointed Carolyn Weir as executive director. Weir, who joined VCF in 2011 on a two-year community philanthropy fellowship, previously served as a senior philanthropy advisor to the McClure Foundation, which supports efforts to promote equitable access to education and training pathways that lead to quality jobs.
Washington, D.C.
The Greater Washington Community Foundation has announced the first round of grants awarded through its 2020 Count DMV In Census Project, an initiative aimed at ensuring an accurate and complete census count in the District of Columbia, Montgomery and Prince George's counties in Maryland, and northern Virginia. Funded by the Bainum Family, Bauman, Consumer Health, Eugene & Agnes E. Meyer, and Weissberg foundations as well as United Way of the National Capital Area, grants totaling $287,000 were awarded to nonprofits working with hard-to-count communities, including people living with disabilities, communities of color, and formerly incarcerated people. Recipients include Arc of the District of Columbia, CASA de Maryland, the Ethiopian Community Center, and the Virginia Coalition for Immigrant Rights.
Wisconsin
The Greater Green Bay Community Foundation has awarded grants totaling $134,000 through its Funds for Greater Green Bay grant program to eighteen nonprofits serving Brown, Kewaunee, and Oconto counties. Recipients include Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Wisconsin, which will use its grant to expand its one-to-one youth mentoring program; Clarity Care, whose Help at Home program provides affordable supportive care services for the elderly; and Golden House, in support of its advocacy efforts and community partnerships that facilitate sustainable employment for victims of domestic abuse.
