Community Foundation Update (11/26/2022)
Arizona
The LGBTQ+ Alliance Fund, an initiative of the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona, has announced the creation of its seventh permanent endowment. According to the foundation, supporters Kathy Altman and Ivy Schwartz have devoted significant treasures, personal and professional, to the advancement of LGBTQ+ equity in Pima County. Established in 1999, the Alliance Fund has awarded 219 grants to 75 organizations, totaling $1,131,957.
Colorado
The Community Foundation Boulder County has announced 74 grants totaling $226,800 to community partners through its Community Trust to nonprofit organizations working in the areas of civic engagement and health and human services. The trust’s second round of grants boosts its total grantmaking in 2022 to $420,000.
Connecticut
The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has announced that its Black Giving Circle Fund awarded three grants of $10,000 each to local organizations supporting greater Hartford’s Black community. Recipients include the New England Air Museum, in support of a permanent exhibit about the Tuskegee Airmen; the Amistad Center for Art and Culture, for its new teen arts advocates program; and Girls With Impact, Inc., to train under-resourced women of color and change their futures.
Georgia
The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta has announced grants totaling more than $500,000 to eight organizations working in the areas of COVID-19 education and vaccine support, services for cancer patients, education, and tax outreach. Recipients include the Black Child Development Institute-Atlanta, the 5 Strong Scholarship Foundation, Chase the Victory, and Purpose Built Schools.
Indiana
Hamilton County Community Foundation, part of the Central Indiana Community Foundation, has announced the three not-for-profit organizations selected by Festival of Philanthropy attendees to receive Pillar Award grants. Agape Therapeutic Riding, Brooke’s Place, and Fueled for School were each awarded $5,000, made possible by Pillar Sponsors: Ivy Tech Community College of Hamilton County, United Way of Central Indiana, and Aspire Indiana Health.
Louisiana
The Baton Rouge Area Foundation (BRAF) has announced that Jacinda Townsend’s second novel, Mother Country, has won the 2022 Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence, presented annually by BRAF in support of an emerging African American fiction writer. Townsend will receive $15,000 to support the continuation of her craft. The award is given to honor the late Ernest Gaines, whose stories gave voice to African Americans in rural areas.
Montana
The Park County Community Foundation hosted the first annual State of Park County community gathering to address the release of its 2022 We Will Park County report and the 2022 We Will community survey. Launched in 2018 with input from residents from Wilsall to Cooke City, We Will Park County was created to help county residents realize the future they want by annually presenting facts and opinions on the most important issues facing the county. The latest report found that a significant number of residents believe Park County is changing faster than they would like. People are concerned that the things they value about living there may be lost: 69 percent agree that there is a lack of planning for growth, 82 percent agree that the number of people struggling financially is increasing, and 96 percent agree that it’s important to preserve natural resources such as water and air for future generations.
Pennsylvania
The Chester County Community Foundation in West Chester has announced that the Whitford Charitable Classic awarded more than $120,000 to 11 local nonprofit organizations in the area. Each grantee will receive at least $10,000. The event brought together Whitford Country Club members and an extensive network of supporters and grantees from the community to play in golf, tennis, and pickleball tournaments as well as the Whitford Gala and Auction. Since its inception in 2011, the event has raised more than $1.2 million.
