Community Foundation Update (3/07/09)

California

The Silicon Valley Community Foundation has announced the release of the 2009 Silicon Valley Index (64 pages, PDF). Among other things, the report finds that the region is not producing enough talent to meet its workforce needs in the next decade as the industry mix changes and new skills are required. The report was co-produced by Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network.

The foundation also announced the appointment of Anne F. Macdonald, a partner at accounting and consulting firm Frank, Rimerman & Co, to its board of directors.

Georgia

The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta has announced the promotion of Lesley Grady to senior vice president of community partnerships.

Hawaii

The Hawaii Community Foundation has released an organizational effectiveness evaluation report (10 pages, PDF) that examines the foundation's organizational capacity-building grantmaking and its Promoting Outstanding Nonprofit Organizations (PONO) leadership program. According to the report, while leadership-development programs are notoriously hard to measure, the data collected to date provide evidence that PONO is achieving its goals.

Illinois

The Chicago Community Trust has announced a new partnership with the Wallace Foundation and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs as part of the Arts Engagement Exchange. The partnership will provide knowledge-sharing sessions and small grants to arts organizations with operating revenues under $1 million to help them build, diversify, and engage audiences and to ensure that their marketing momentum is not lost due to economic concerns.

Kansas

The Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas has announced that it awarded grants totaling more than $75,000 as part of a three-year initiative with the Kansas Health Foundation to improve nutrition and physical activity for residents of the state. According to Stephanie Joiner, program director of the initiative, the goal is to double that amount by 2011.

Massachusetts

The Boston Foundation has announced a series of capacity-building workshops for nonprofit professionals in the areas of finance, management, developing contingency plans, human resource management, and fundraising. Geared toward executive directors, the workshops are also open to senior managers and board members.

Ohio

The Akron Community Foundation has announced education grants totaling $441,000, almost $220,000 of which benefited early learning initiatives. Grantees include the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority, the Summit County Family and Children First Council's Child Find program, and Child Guidance and Family Solutions.

The Columbus Foundation has announced a $200,000 grant from the American Electric Power Foundation in response to its critical need alert. Half of that will be used to match contributions from new donors. The funds will be used to establish the Safety Net Fund, which will help twenty area nonprofits provide food and housing to people in need in central Ohio.

Oregon

The Portland-based Oregon Community Foundation has released findings from a recent survey of 113 nonprofits across the state which found that demand for services is up an average of 16 percent since July 2008 and that corporate giving and large individual donations declined in 2008 for more than half the organizations surveyed.

Washington

The Seattle Foundation has announced that its president and CEO, Phyllis Campbell, is leaving the foundation to lead Pacific Northwest operations for JPMorgan Chase.

Washington, D.C.

The Prince George's Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region, has announced the recipients of its fourth-annual Civil Leadership Awards. Recipients include Southern Maryland Hospital president and chair Francis P. Chiaramonte, Court Appointed Special Advocates executive director Anne Marie Foley Bisner, and Rising STARS Youth Scholarship Foundation founder and president Herman C. Dawson.
