Community Foundation Update (3/21/15)
Connecticut
Fairfield County's Community Foundation in Norwalk has announced the appointments of Karen Brown as vice president of innovation and strategic learning and Nancy von Euler as vice president of programs. The foundation also announced that it is adopting Results Based Accountability, a data-driven approach that focuses on quality-of-life results sought in the community, to measure the impact of its competitive grantmaking and community leadership initiatives. The Center for Nonprofit Excellence will provide training and support to organizations that receive funding from the foundation in how to use RBA to measure their impact and improve their programs.
Georgia
The Newton Fund of the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta has awarded grants totaling $21,500, the Newton Citizen reports. The money was raised during the fund's Jersey Day initiative, in which companies allow their employees to wear the shirt or cap of their favorite sports team one day a week in return for a small donation (typically a dollar or two). Recipients included A Child's Voice, Prevent Child Abuse Rockdale, More Than Conquerors, the Newton County Trail Path Foundation, Path Project, Project ReNeWal, and the Rainbow Community Center.
Idaho
The Gladys E. Langroise Advised Fund of the Boise-based Idaho Community Foundation has awarded grants totaling $425,973 to nonprofits in every region of the state, the Idaho Statesman reports. Recipients include the Boise Philharmonic, the Children's Home Society, Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area, and Boise Rescue Mission.
Louisiana
The Greater New Orleans Foundation has announced that its Organizational Effectiveness Initiative is offering two free learning opportunities: Foundation Directory Online training and the Board Governance 101 workshop. FDO training will be held April 9 at the office of the Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations, while the workshop will be held May 19 at GNOF's office.
Michigan
The Livonia Community Foundation has awarded ten grants totaling $27,500 and will honor former Mayor Robert Bennett, who helped establish the foundation, hometownlife.com reports. Recipients include First Step, Livonia Kids and Families, Seedlings Braille Books for Children, and the Angela Hospice Bereavement Program. Bennett, who served as president of the foundation for years, remains an active member of its board of trustees.
Ohio
The Columbus Foundation has announced the names of its Five Nonprofits to Watch, a list of local organizations poised to achieve exceptional growth and progress in 2015. The organizations are the Boys & Girls Clubs of Columbus, Charitable Pharmacy of Central Ohio, the Columbus Museum of Art, Reeb Community Center, and St. Vincent Family Center.
Vermont
The Vermont Community Foundation in Middlebury has announced that funding for childcare centers in the state is available from the Edwards Child Care Scholarship. Funded by the O.P. and W.E. Edwards Foundation, the scholarships provide up to $2,000 to nonprofit childcare centers in support of children who, as a result of geographic or economic isolation, may face difficulties preparing for elementary school. The deadline to apply is May 1.
