Community Foundation Update (7/09/16)
Florida
The Gulf Coast Community Foundation in Venice has elected Jay McHargue as chair of its board of directors and Judy Cahn as vice chair.
The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties in West Palm Beach has announced $250,000 in matching grants to ten local nonprofits. Through the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fund, each organization will receive a dollar-for-dollar match of $25,000 to establish an endowment at the foundation.
Illinois
The Chicago Community Trust has announced the promotion of Jason Baxendale to the position of chief development officer. Baxendale will succeed Jamie Phillippe, who is retiring on September 30.
Indiana
The Central Indiana Community Foundation in Indianapolis has announced that its Legacy Fund of Hamilton County affiliate was awarded a $1.5 million matching grant through the Lilly Endowment’s Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow (GIFT) program. The fund also announced that it was able to leverage more than $1 million of the GIFT grant to raise an additional $657,825 for the Endowment for Hamilton County, a permanent fund administered by its board of directors that allocates grants to a variety of nonprofits serving Hamilton County. The Legacy Fund used the remainder of the GIFT grant to raise $1 million to help launch the Community Leadership Innovation Fund in conjunction with the Indianapolis Foundation, another CICF affiliate. With the grant from GIFT and new contributions, the fund was able to add a total of $1.47 million to its Community Leadership Innovation Fund.
Massachusetts
The Cape Cod Foundation in Yarmouthport has announced that its GALE (Gay and Lesbian Equity) Fund, which supports the region’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) community, has awarded more than $6,000 to five grantees working to support that community. Recipients include the Barnstable Senior Center, the Family Equality Council, Nauset Regional Middle School, Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands, and the Cape and Islands Gay and Straight Youth Alliance. Since its creation in 1998, the GALE Fund has raised and distributed more than $260,000 to local organizations in support of programs that improve the lives of LGBTQ individuals and their families.
Oklahoma
The Oklahoma City Community Foundation has elected businessman Bond Payne to a two-year term as chair of its board of trustees.
North Dakota
The North Dakota Community Foundation in Bismarck has announced that it surpassed $68 million in net assets in 2015. Established in 1976 to improve the quality of life of North Dakotans, NDCF manages more than six hundred component funds, including sixty-two local community foundations in the state and over a hundred and fifty scholarship funds.
South Carolina
The Community Foundation of the Lowcountry on Hilton Head Island has appointed Kevin S. Smith as its vice president for grantmaking and community leadership.
Texas
Communities Foundation of Texas in Dallas has announced that the 2016 Elizabeth Abrams Memorial Scholarship was awarded to recent Plano West High School graduate Avery Kravoletz, who will receive a one-year, $3,000 scholarship to study economics at Duke University.
Vermont
The Vermont Community Foundation in Middlebury has announced twenty-nine grants totaling $54,473 in support of local projects. Recipients of the Small and Inspiring Grants include Zig Zag Lit Mag, Heartbeet Lifesharing, Pathways Vermont, and the Vermont River Conservancy.
