CVS Caremark Charitable Trust Awards $2.6 Million in Grants

The CVS Caremark Charitable Trust has announced grants totaling $2.6 million to nonprofit organizations across the country working to expand access to health care and improve programming for children with disabilities.

The foundation awarded grants totaling more than $680,000 in support of efforts to improve access to health care, ranging from wellness programs for military veterans to breast screenings for underserved women. Grant recipients include the California Schools Health Centers Association, which will use its grant to open three school-based health centers in low-income communities in the Oakland area. Another $285,000 in grants will support organizations that are implementing coordinated care for children with disabilities. One of those grantees, the May Institute in Randolph, Massachusetts, will use its grant to expand access to effective autism treatment for children in military families and improve the coordination of their care.

The foundation also awarded more than $400,000 in grants to programs responding to the early intervention needs of children. Grantees include the Marcus Autism Center in Atlanta, which will use its grant to implement eye-tracking technology that makes it possible to diagnose children with autism earlier, improving their odds of receiving early intervention services. And the foundation awarded grants totaling more than $780,000 in support of efforts to expand opportunities for children of all abilities to learn, play, and succeed side-by-side. Grant recipients include the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, which will use its grant to support adaptive sports programming for disadvantaged youth of all abilities.

"We are excited to help deserving nonprofit organizations with the funding they need to create healthier outcomes in their local communities in 2013," said CVS Caremark Charitable Trust president Eileen Howard Boone. "All of the nonprofit organizations we support share our purpose of helping people on their path to better health, and we are honored to recognize the important work they do to make a difference in the lives of children and families in the communities we serve."
