Foundations, corporations providing support for Ukraine (03/20/2022)

Airbnb has announced that its co-founders—Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia, and Nathan Blecharczyk—and Blecharczyk’s wife, Elizabeth, will match up to $10 million in donations to Airbnb.org through the end of March in support of efforts to offer housing to refugees fleeing Ukraine. Since February 28, more than 21,500 people around the world have signed up to share their homes with refugees, including 14,000 across Europe, where the need for Airbnb.org hosts is currently the greatest. More than a quarter of these people were not existing hosts on Airbnb.

In addition to a $3 million donation last week to an international relief organization to help victims of the conflict in Ukraine, the Breakthrough Prize Foundation has announced a $3 million commitment in support of physicists, life scientists, and mathematicians who have been forced to flee Ukraine. The donation follows an open letter from past recipients of the Breakthrough Prize, published on the foundation’s website, stating that they “stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine in support of their unqualified right to peace, security, and self-determination.” The additional gift was inspired by the death of Yuliia Zdanovska, a 21-year-old who had helped Ukraine’s team win the silver medal in the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad, who was helping other civilians during the bombardment of Kharkiv.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced gifts of $2 million each to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the World Food Programme (WFP) to help those displaced by the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. The gift to UNHCR will help an estimated 40,000 displaced families, while the gift to WFP is expected to provide food for some 11,000 people for four months.

Funding will be distributed to numerous charitable organizations associated with immediate refugee assistance for displaced Ukrainians as well as other peaceful humanitarian efforts.

The CMA Foundation has announced contributions totaling C$250,000 ($198,503) in support of emergency response efforts in Ukraine. The foundation has committed to match funds up to C$200,000 ($158,811) raised for UNICEF Canada’s Help, Hope and Healing appeal. The initiative, launched earlier this month with Children’s Healthcare Canada and Pediatric Chairs of Canada, aims to address children’s healthcare needs in Ukraine, including support for healthcare workers caring for children and youth, strengthening the on-the-ground infrastructure, securing critical medical supplies, and providing key services and safe spaces for children and their families. The CMA Foundation also is providing C$50,000 ($39,706) to the Canadian Red Cross to support its ongoing humanitarian assistance, including mobile health teams, support for critical infrastructure and provision of emergency supplies.

Education Cannot Wait (ECW) and its strategic partners have announced a $5 million grant aimed at bolstering global education in emergencies response to a conflict that has impacted 5.7 million school-aged children and put hundreds of thousands of lives at risk. The grant also aims to mobilize an additional $20 million in funding to align with the needs outlined in United Nations Office of Coordination of Humanitarian Affaris’ (OCHA) Flash Appeal, which was recently launched to respond to urgent humanitarian needs in Ukraine. The grant will be managed by Save the Children and UNICEF, and focus on protecting the well-being of Ukraine’s conflict-affected children. Once conditions allow, the grant will provide continuous access to education and psychosocial support for the children and adolescents impacted by the deteriorating situation.

Ingersoll Rand has announced it is partnering with World Food Program USA (WFP USA) to provide food assistance in Ukraine. A global provider of mission-critical flow creation and industrial solutions, Ingersoll Rand donated $250,000 in support of WFP’s emergency food distribution and has committed up to an additional $250,000 through matching employee donations. In addition, it has pledged to contribute another $500,000 in product donations designed to help with medical, water, sanitation, and disaster response solutions in Ukraine.

The Philanthropy Europe Association has announced the launch of integrated online portals PhilanthropyForUkraine.eu and NGOforUkraine.eu to better coordinate the efforts, initiatives, and calls for donations from the European philanthropy sector and NGO community in Ukraine and neighboring countries. The portals will directly support the work of philanthropic organizations and international NGOs.

The Quest Diagnostics Foundation has announced a $500,000 donation to Project HOPE in support of its humanitarian crisis relief efforts in Ukraine and for Ukrainian refugees in Eastern Europe. Project HOPE is on the ground in Ukraine delivering medical supplies and other urgent assistance. In addition, the organization is coordinating with local groups in Ukraine, Poland, Moldova, and Romania to provide support inside Ukraine as well as in the surrounding countries.
