Gardiner Museum receives $6.68 million from Radlett Foundation

A busy museum.

The Gardiner Museum in Toronto has announced a C$9 million ($6.68 million) gift from the Radlett Foundation.

The largest gift from an individual in the museum’s history was made in honor of the late William B.G. Humphries, who established the foundation, and includes more than 250 objects from Humphries's collection of ceramics and decorative arts, with a focus on 18th-century English porcelain. These objects will join 62 pieces Humphries donated to the museum during his lifetime.

In addition, the gift will help fund a planned transformation of the museum, including the construction of a fully equipped makerspace, a community engagement center, and an Indigenous gallery space. The capital costs of the project are estimated to be C$14 million ($10.39 million), and construction is expected to begin next summer.

“The Gardiner Museum has been presented with a once-in-a-generation opportunity to bring our physical space in line with our mission to build community with clay,” said Gardiner Museum executive director and CEO Gabrielle Peacock. “The Radlett Foundation’s transformational gift will ensure the Gardiner Museum’s future as a vibrant community hub that welcomes all people and ignites a sense of creativity and wonder.”
