The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation has announced its 2015 class of fellows. Appointed on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise, the successful candidates were chosen from a group of more than thirty-one hundred applicants.

A total of one hundred and seventy-five fellowships (including two joint fellowships) were awarded to scholars, artists, and scientists representing fifty-one disciplines and sixty-three academic institutions; sixty-nine fellows have no academic affiliation or hold an adjunct or part-time position at a university. Hailing from twenty-three states and the District of Columbia as well as two Canadian provinces, this year's fellows range in age from twenty-nine to eighty-three. As in past years, the Leon Levy Foundation is providing supplemental support for fellows with no formal academic affiliation, while the Dorothy Tapper Goldman Foundation is underwriting the fellowship in constitutional studies.

This year's fellows include novelist Jeffrey Renard Allen, physicist Sean M. Carroll, writer Meghan Daum, artist Agnes Denes, playwright Kristoffer Diaz, historian Carmela Vircillo Franklin, filmmaker Victoria Fu, writer Rivka Galchen, artist Vishal Jugdeo, choreographer Jennifer Lacey, translator Tess Lewis, photographer Susan Lipper, poet Cate Marvin, writer Kevin Powers, artist Kukuli Velarde, and law professor Gideon Yaffe.

"These artists and writers, scholars and scientists represent the best of the best," said Edward Hirsch, president of the Guggenheim Foundation. "It's an honor to be able to support these individuals to do the work they were meant to do."
