Hartford Foundation Awards Nearly $2.3 Million in Grants

The John A. Hartford Foundation has announced grants totaling $2.275 million in the areas of palliative care and aging-related philanthropy.

The foundation awarded $2 million over five years to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in support of the Center to Advance Palliative Care and the implementation of a transformative business plan for the center that will further expand the availability of palliative care. To that end, foundation staff will work with CAPC to find other funders willing to contribute toward the fundraising target outlined in the plan as CAPC transitions to a largely self-sustaining, revenue-generating membership model.

In addition, the foundation awarded $275,000 to Grantmakers In Aging in support of GIA's efforts to boost its membership base and expand the number of foundations investing in aging-related issues. To that end, the foundation will provide annual operating support of $75,000 over three years to GIA — an amount to be matched by four other foundations — enabling the organization to expand its core activities, including educational webinars, the dissemination of issue briefs, and a funders learning collaborative. The remaining $50,000 from the foundation will be used to fund the first phase in an evidence-based communications strategy designed to encourage broader engagement and support for aging programs and policies.
