Heinz Family Foundation announces 2024 Heinz Award recipients
The Heinz Family Foundation in Pittsburgh has announced the winners of the 29th annual Heinz Awards.
Established in 1993 to honor the memory of Sen. John Heinz (R-PA), who was killed in a plane crash in 1991, the awards recognize extraordinary individuals for their achievement in finding solutions to critical issues in areas that were important to Heinz: the arts, the economy, and the environment. The award includes an unrestricted cash prize of $250,000.
This year’s winners in the arts category are Jennie C. Jones—a sonic and visual artist whose work engages with the history of American modernism and minimalism while investigating avant-garde music of the same era—and Gala Porras-Kim, a visual artist whose work challenges institutions to reassess their role as stewards of history and culture. In the economy category, the recipients are Aisha Nyandoro, founding CEO of Springboard to Opportunities and founder of Magnolia Mother’s Trust, and Jessica Sager and Janna Wagner, co-founders of All Our Kin.
In the environment category, the winners include Amira Diamond and Melinda Kramer, co-founders of the Women’s Earth Alliance, and Scott Loarie and Ken-ichi Ueda, co-organizers of iNaturalist.
“Each year, the Heinz Awards recognizes individuals who demonstrate outstanding courage, compassion and tenacity in pursuit of social, economic and environmental change,” said Heinz Family Foundation chair Teresa Heinz. “From connecting us to the diversity of the natural world and creating art that transforms our perspective to developing solutions that address poverty and enable economic stability, this year’s recipients exemplify the qualities that my husband, John Heinz, held in highest regard: intellectual curiosity, an informed optimism, a passion for excellence, a willingness to take risks and the joyous belief that individuals have the power and the responsibility to change the world for the better."
