Home Depot Foundation awards $6.6 million for veterans’ housing
The Home Depot Foundation in Atlanta has announced grants totaling $6.6 million to Meals on Wheels America, its Atlanta affiliate, and Purple Heart Homes to be used for home repairs and modifications that address the individual needs of more than 400 combat-wounded, low-income, and disabled veterans.
A grant of $2.3 million to Meals on Wheels America will provide support services to 275 senior veterans, while grants of $1 million to Meals on Wheels Atlanta and $1.2 million to Purple Heart Homes will support home repairs for more than 180 veterans. In addition, the foundation will work with partners to construct 12 smart homes for veterans.
Citing data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that more than one million veterans serving after 2001 have a severe service-connected disability, the foundation has pledged to invest $500 million in veterans’ causes by 2025. Since 2011, it has committed more than $400 million to improve more than 50,000 veterans’ homes and facilities in partnership with groups including the Gary Sinise Foundation and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
“[The Home Depot Foundation’s] support makes a tremendous difference in the lives of senior veterans across the country, and together, along with our local programs, we've been able to make critical home repairs and modifications that have helped over 1,900 veterans stay comfortably in their homes—right where they want to be,” said Meals on Wheels America president and CEO Ellie Hollander.
