The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) in Chevy Chase, Maryland, has announced its 2023 cohort of Gilliam Fellows.

Through the annual Gilliam Fellowships for Advanced Study program, 50 graduate students and their advisors will receive a total of $53,000 per year for up to three years to create an inclusive academic environment and increase the diversity of scientists at the faculty level. This year’s fellows come from 37 schools across the United States, including eight institutions receiving their first-ever Gilliam Fellowship award. To date, the program has selected more than 450 fellows.

In collaboration with the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research, Gilliam advisors participate in a year-long mentor development course that emphasizes cultural awareness. Since 2015, more than 200 Gilliam advisors have completed the training.

“Gilliam Fellows join a diverse and supportive community of scientific leaders who are working to forge new pathways to empower others to achieve personal success,” said HHMI vice president of the Center for the Advancement of Science Leadership and Culture Blanton Tolbert. “In this way, the program reflects what should be the norm across all of science: Today’s students should expect to see leaders from all different backgrounds and experiences, reflecting true equity and inclusion in science.”
