Health insurance company Humana has announced a $40 million investment to increase the supply of affordable housing in 16 states.

This latest round of funding raises Humana’s total affordable housing commitment to $90 million and doubles the number of communities taking part in the program, which aims to help vulnerable Americans remain stably housed by expanding the supply of low-cost rental units in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.

According to Humana, housing stability is a key social determinant of health, making affordable housing an essential part of the company’s triad of programs designed to address community health and well-being—particularly among underserved and homeless populations—that also includes healthcare access for those with significant health risks and investments in community capacity-building projects.

“We recognize that housing quality and related support services have a direct impact on health,” said Humana Healthy Horizons president John Barger. “Through creative partnerships in affordable housing, we can help people gain access to safe and quality places to live and provide the stability they need to focus on achieving their best health.”
