Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund Awards Nearly $4.2 Million in Grants
The Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund has announced nineteen grants totaling $4.18 million in support of housing assistance, social services, and volunteer management in coastal communities affected by the storm.
The final grants in the fund's most recent $10 million funding cycle include $1.5 million to the Princeton Area Community Foundation to provide gap funding for the construction of eleven prefabricated homes in cooperation with the Borough of Union Beach. Other grant recipients include Catholic Charities, Diocese of Trenton, which was awarded $400,000 to help families with mortgage, rental, home repair, and temporary housing assistance, as well as to hire a therapist and case manager to provide domestic violence counseling; Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ocean County, which will receive $100,000 to improve access to case management services and expand a school-based mentoring program; and the First Baptist Church of Manasquan, which was awarded $10,000 to provide housing facilities for volunteers.
The fund, which has awarded fifty-one grants totaling $11 million — including $1 million allocated to county-based long-term recovery committees in February — is planning a National Dine Out Day fundraising event on June 19.
"The relief efforts we are supporting today range from home rebuilding in Union Beach, food pantry replenishment, local churches in need of improved capacity to expand relief services, and furniture and appliance replacement for low-income storm victims," said Mary Pat Christie, board chair of the fund and the wife of New Jersey governor Chris Christie. "While this closes out our current grant cycle, we will be making additional grant announcements in the coming weeks. Simply put, we will be here for the long term and will keep working to raise funding and awareness as long as people need help."
