The James B. McClatchy Foundation (JBMF) in Sacramento, California, has announced its “sunrise” strategy to spend down the entirety of its endowment by 2030.

In April, the foundation awarded its first round of sunrise grants totaling $10 million. Created through extensive dialogue with Central Valley residents and community-based organizations after more than 100 listening sessions, the newly released Sunrise Plan revolves around three overarching goals: fostering a transformed education system for multilingual learners and their families, advancing a diverse and sustainable local journalism ecosystem, and cultivating inclusive leadership for the next generation. JBMF intends to continue its collaboration with anchor institutions and partners who share their purpose and are committed to driving change in the Central Valley, as the work is ongoing and requires continued support.

“We are committed to devoting all of our resources to these efforts through 2030,” said JBMF chief executive Priscilla Enriquez. “We plan to collaborate with our anchor partners, next-gen leaders, and new and existing funders within the framework of the Sunrise Plan to advance a thriving, democratically engaged, multiracial community in the Central Valley. Our goals are dependent on others and will be reached long after the foundation sunsets.”
