The Kalamazoo Community Foundation in Michigan has announced grants totaling more than $4.1 million to nonprofit organizations serving Kalamazoo County.
The second-quarter grants include nearly $1.4 million to organizations working in the areas of community development, education, human services, and family and youth development. Recipients include Kalamazoo County Ready 4s, which was awarded $350,000 in support of high-quality pre-kindergarten programming; the Western Michigan University Foundation, which will receive $50,000 in support of the county's infant foster care unit; Volunteer Kalamazoo, which was awarded $40,000 in support of its volunteer engagement and nonprofit capacity-building efforts; and the Southwest Michigan Black Heritage Society, which will receive $10,000 in support of summer and fall programming in its racial healing initiative.
Distributions also included a total of $696,000 from advised funds, $424,000 from field-of-interest funds, and more than $1.6 million from funds designated for specific nonprofit agencies.
"We are energized by this round of grantmaking, allowing us to address such a wide variety of community needs," said KCF president and CEO Carrie Pickett-Erway. "We're thankful for our donors who have made large and small gifts, and recognize the hard work by the volunteers on our community investment committee for providing their insights on how to best meet the many demands throughout the community — both current and future needs."
