Lilly Endowment awards $91.5 million to bolster Indiana youth groups

The Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment has announced grants totaling $91.5 million in support of nine national youth-serving organizations to bolster their efforts in Indiana.

Grants ranging from $3 million to $30 million were awarded based on several factors such as the number of youth served by the organization in the state, the number of Indiana affiliates, the depth and breadth of its programs in the state, and the extent to which the organization’s affiliates serve youth affected by poverty and other social challenges. Recipients include Big Brothers Big Sisters of America ($5 million), Boys & Girls Clubs of America ($30 million), and Girls Inc. ($15 million).

“The affiliates and chapters of the organizations funded with these grants collectively serve more than 400,000 youth in Indiana. The endowment believes that these grants will help the organizations serve more effectively and reach even more youth. We are especially encouraged by the potential for enhanced impact from the collaborations envisioned by many of the organizations,” said Lilly Endowment vice president for education Ted Maple. “We also are pleased by the interest of the national organizations in replicating strategies that succeed in Indiana with their affiliates and chapters around the country.”
