Michigan Masons Award $5 Million for Detroit Literacy Programs
The Michigan Masonic Charitable Foundation has announced a ten-year, $5 million grant to S.A.Y. Detroit in support of literacy and tutorial programs for thousands of families and students in the city's Lipke Park neighborhood.
The grant will provide continuing support for literacy and tutoring programs at the S.A.Y. Play Center for youth between the ages of 8 and 18. To be eligible for the programs, students must strive to achieve a 3.0 GPA, maintain an outstanding attendance record in school, and spend at least an hour each visit participating in one the center's state-of-the-art enrichment programs, which include robotics and STEM subjects, and dance, music, and the arts.
"The Masons are making a tremendous commitment to the future of Detroit's kids," said S.A.Y. Detroit founder Mitch Albom. "From the beginning, the Masons expressed unbridled enthusiasm for helping on all levels of our city's needs, from day care to senior citizens. I have been overwhelmed by the Masons' level of commitment and devotion to doing good work."
