Montana Farmer Bequeaths $38 Million to Health Organizations

Paul Metzger, a wheat farmer who passed away in May, left his entire $38 million estate, to be divided equally, to the Billings Clinic and St. Vincent Healthcare, the Billings Gazette reports.

Each organization will add the largest gift it has ever received to its endowment and will decide later how best to use the funds. Metzger, whose formal schooling ended in eighth grade when he went to work on the family farm, retired in the 1970s and lived in a sparsely furnished condominium. His late sister, Grace, had made a $2.4 million gift anonymously to the Billings Clinic to endow cardiovascular services. At the time, it was the largest gift the clinic had ever received from an individual.

"He was humble, thoughtful, didn’t want anybody to make a fuss over him, but very decisive, too," said Todd Preston, Metzger's financial advisor. "It was Paul's hope that this [gift] will serve as both a blessing to the community and a challenge to others to be benevolent and return a portion of what this wonderful place we call home [has given] to us."
