More than $1.5 million awarded to increase public access to poetry
The Poetry Foundation in Chicago has announced 54 grants totaling more than $1.5 million in support of organizations providing resources to increase public access to poetry.
Using a trust-based philanthropic framework, the foundation engaged in a community-based proposal review process awarding grants ranging from $10,000 to $75,000 in three principal areas: equity in verse; programs, partnerships, and innovation; and special opportunities. The awards will fund programs that focus on poets and writers from historically underserved communities, poetry activities for youth, writing workshops for adults, festivals, residencies, and publications.
Recipients include Community of Literary Magazines and Presses (New York, $60,000), Youth Speaks (California, $40,000), and Reading Between the Lines (Illinois, $35,000). According to the foundation, 59 percent of awards were for general operating support, and 72 percent of recipient organizations are BIPOC-led.
