New York Public Radio Receives $10 Million From Greene Foundation

New York Public Radio has received a $10 million gift from the Jerome L. Greene Foundation, the New York Times reports.

Some $8 million of what is believed to be the largest gift ever to a public radio station will be used to support development of NYPR's digital operations, including a new mobile app feature called "Discover" that went live in conjunction with announcement of the gift. Developed in-house, the feature enables listeners to generate custom downloadable playlists of WNYC content.

The remaining $2 million of the gift will be used to preserve affordable ticket prices at NYPR's Jerome L. Greene Performance Space, which opened in 2008 with previous support from the foundation.

"We made a very clear decision that we as a broadcast station and a national producer needed to undergo a digital transformation," New York Public Radio CEO Laura R. Walker told the Times. "It's really important to have the digital development and social media people sitting beside the content people."
