The Joyce Foundation has announced the addition of STEVEN KOCH and NICHOLAS TURNER to its board of directors. Koch is a corporate leader who most recently served as interim CEO of bike share company Motivate and as deputy mayor of Chicago from 2012 to 2017. Turner is the president and director of the Vera Institute of Justice.
The Bonfils-Stanton Foundation has announced the appointment of two new trustees. PATRICIA BACA, who served as the first Latina deputy superintendent for Denver Public Schools, is a champion of underserved populations and has spent decades advocating for equal opportunities for all, especially children. REHAN K. HASAN is a corporate lawyer and business advisor who assists companies as general outside counsel practicing in all areas of business/corporate law, tax, securities, and financing.
The McCune Foundation has announced the appointment of ARACELI CENTENO as its new program officer. Centeno has worked as a community organizer, tackling issues such as environmental justice, workers’ rights, and gentrification. She earned a master’s degree in Public Health from the Keck School of Medicine at USC and worked on National Institutes of Health-funded research on chronic diseases in agricultural workers, mental health equity, youth leadership, and early literacy initiatives.
The Eli Lilly and Company Foundation has elected CYNTHIA CARDONA as its president; she also will serve as senior director of social impact for the company. Cardona will lead the foundation’s philanthropic activities to advance racial justice, improve educational outcomes for underserved students, enhance global health outcomes, and improve quality of life for people in Indianapolis. As head of Lilly’s social impact team, she will lead the company’s civic and investor engagement, employee giving and volunteerism, corporate responsibility reporting, global health partnerships, and disaster relief efforts.
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has appointed scholar and author CAROLYN DINSHAW as senior program officer of its Higher Learning grantmaking area, effective February 14. The position supports efforts to shape and direct funding for higher education, specifically in the humanities and liberal arts. She joins the foundation following a 23-year tenure as professor of social and cultural analysis and English at New York University, where her courses ranged in subject from medieval misogyny to queer New York City.
The International Women’s Media Foundation has announced that CRAIG NEWMARK, founder of craigslist and Craig Newmark Philanthropies, has joined its board. A longtime supporter of the IWMF’s efforts to support women journalists facing online abuse, Newmark has contributed $600,000 toward IWMF-led projects, including the Coalition Against Online Violence and the Online Violence Response Hub—global resources that acknowledge the risks women journalists face online and provide resources to combat abuse.
The Caring for Colorado Foundation has announced the appointment of ANNE GARCIA and KRAIG BURLESON to its board of directors. For the past 20 years, Burleson has served as CEO of Inner City Health Center, which is focused on reducing inequities to health and health care for uninsured and under-insured people in the metro Denver region. Garcia is a financial professional with more than 40 years’ experience, most recently serving as chief financial and operating officer for Rose Community Foundation from 2002 until her retirement in 2019.
Mayors Against Illegal Guns, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, has announced 10 new co-chairs—the first new co-chairs since its founding in 2006. Serving two-year terms, the new co-chairs join founding chair Michael R. Bloomberg include Baltimore mayor BRANDON SCOTT; Chattanooga, Tennessee, mayor TIM KELLY; former Columbia, South Carolina, mayor STEVE BENJAMIN; Kansas City, Missouri, mayor QUINTON LUCAS; Mount Vernon, New York, mayor SHAWYN PATTERSON-HOWARD; New York City mayor ERIC ADAMS; former Stockton, California, mayor MICHAEL TUBBS; St. Louis mayor TISHAURA JONES; Tampa, Florida mayor JANE CASTOR; and Tucson, Arizona, mayor REGINA ROMERO. Members implement and advocate for life-saving gun safety reforms—from local community violence intervention programs and enforcement strategies to municipal-level gun safety ordinances—and state and federal legislation.
The Women’s Sports Foundation has announced the appointment of 30-year industry veteran DANETTE LEIGHTON as CEO. Most recently the chief marketing officer of the Pac-12 Conference, Leighton brings an array of operational, data and analytics, sponsorship, fan engagement, marketing, and sales experience to WSF, spanning professional and college sports for men and women.
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has announced the appointment of CHRISTOPHER BEDFORD as its new director. Bedford, who previously served as the director of the Baltimore Museum of Art, over the position in June, following the resignation of NEAL BENEZRA.
The Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in Manhattan has announced that its new director, MARIA NICANOR, will start on March 21. Since 2017, Nicanor has served as executive director of the Rice Design Alliance at Rice University’s School of Architecture in Houston, and she spent several years in various roles at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
