The Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, has announced the selection of DEVIN SINGLETON as communications associate. Singleton most recently served as director of marketing and business development for Kagan’s Home in High Point, North Carolina.

The Open Society Foundations (OSF) has announced the appointment of LEIGH M. CHAPMAN as director of pro-democracy alliance and structural reform. In this new role, the former acting secretary of state of Pennsylvania will lead OSF’s work to strengthen U.S. democracy by shoring up and reforming democratic institutions, expanding and protecting voting rights, and building a multiracial, pro-democracy majority. Before being appointed acting secretary of state in 2022, Chapman worked as senior director of the voting rights program at the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, as executive director of Deliver My Vote, and as staff attorney for the Advancement Project’s Voter Protection Program.

AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles, a public-private ocean institute dedicated to accelerating scientific collaboration for a more sustainable, just, and equitable world, has announced the election of TARA ROTH to its board. Roth is president of the Goldhirsh Foundation, where she has supported sustainable solutions to social and environmental challenges, including spearheading impact investments to make its endowment 100 percent mission-aligned.

The American Constitution Society has announced SHERRILYN IFILL as the recipient of its 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award, given in recognition of a lifelong dedication to realizing the promise of the U.S. Constitution and defending the rights of all Americans. Ifill, a senior fellow at the Ford Foundation, served as president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense & Education Fund (LDF) from 2013 to 2022, where she helped increase the organization’s visibility, engagement, and leadership in addressing urgent civil rights issues and fighting voter suppression, inequity in education, housing, and racial discrimination in the criminal justice system.

Multiplying Good (formerly the Jefferson Award Foundation), a New York City-based nonprofit focused on fueling personal growth and leadership through public service, has announced that CEO HILLARY SCHAFER will step down after 10 years of service. She will remain as CEO until her successor is named and move into a leadership role on the board when the transition is complete.

The New England Aquarium has announced the appointment of LETISE LAFEIR as its first-ever chief conservation and stewardship officer, effective May 1. LaFeir will oversee the aquarium’s Animal Care division, Conservation Learning team, and the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life, its scientific research institution. An expert on ocean issues and ocean policy with aquarium experience, she joins the aquarium from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, where she served as senior advisor.

Sesame Workshop has announced the election of GABY SULZBERGER as the chair of its board, effective November 2023. A board member since 2019, Sulzberger will be the first African American woman to chair the Sesame Workshop board. She currently serves as a senior advisor at Two Sigma and Centerbridge Partners and is a trustee of the Ford Foundation and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She succeeds FRANS HIJKOOP, who joined the board in 2013.

The Setting Scoliosis Straight Foundation in El Cajon, California, has announced the appointment of new members to its leadership team. SUKEN A. SHAH, division chief of the spine and scoliosis service and clinical fellowship director at the Nemours/Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children, will serve as president; AMER SAMDANI, chief of orthopedics at Shriners Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, will serve as vice president of education; and FIROZ MIYANJI of BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, Canada, will serve as vice president of research. PETER NEWTON and DAVID CLEMENTS stepped down from their positions as president and vice president but will remain on the board of directors.

Social Finance, a national impact finance and advisory nonprofit based in Boston, has announced the selection of STEPHEN VICINELLI and CATHERINE DUN RAPPAPORT to its leadership team. Vicinelli will serve as vice president of impact investments, and Dun Rappaport will serve as vice president of impact advisory. Vicinelli was previously deputy chief investment officer for TIFF Investment Management. Dun Rappaport was previously senior vice president of learning and impact management at BlueHub Capital.

PND notes the passing of Gordon Moore, who co-founded Fairchild Semiconductor in 1957, Intel in 1968, and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation in 2000. He was 94. Moore was known for predicting in 1965 that the cost of transistors would decrease at an exponential rate as the number on each silicon chip doubled annually—which came to be called “Moore’s Law.” The Moores signed the Giving Pledge in 2012 and in 2015 wrote their Statement of Founders’ Intent to elucidate their hopes and expectations for the Moore Foundation. “Betty and I established the [f]oundation because we believe it can make a significant and positive impact in the world,” Gordon wrote. “We want the [f]oundation to tackle large, important issues at a scale where it can achieve significant and measurable impacts.”
