The California Endowment has announced the appointment of KATE KENDELL as the foundation's first-ever chief of staff. Kendell, who has served on the endowment's board for the past nine years, most recently was interim chief legal officer at the Southern Poverty Law Center and previously served for twenty-two years as executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights. In her new position, Kendell will play a key role in the development and implementation of the endowment's future work, helping to deepen its racial equity efforts.
The Carnegie Corporation of New York has announced the election of MARTIN BARON, who retired as executive editor of the Washington Post earlier this year, to its board. He is joined by two returning board members: KURT L. SCHMOKE, president of the University of Baltimore, who served as mayor of Baltimore from 1987 to 1999; and ANN CLAIRE WILLIAMS, who served on the federal bench for more than thirty-two years before retiring as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in 2018 and is now in private practice. Each will serve a four-year term.
The Flinn Foundation in Phoenix has announced the election of healthcare technology entrepreneur HEIDI JANNENGA to its board. Jannenga is co-founder of WebPT, a software provider for electronic medical records and practice management for rehabilitation therapists, and a founding member of the Arizona chapter of Golden Seeds, an angel investment group focused on women-led ventures. She also serves on the boards of the Arizona Community Foundation, the Arizona Science Center, the Arizona chapter of Conscious Capitalism, and the Arizona School for the Arts.
The International Monetary Fund has announced that human resources director KALPANA KOCHHAR will be joining the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as director of development policy and finance. Kochhar joined the IMF in 1988 as an economist, was seconded to the World Bank on a two-year stint as chief economist for the South Asia Region, and served as deputy director in the IMF's Asia and Pacific Department and Strategy, Policy, and Review Department.
The W.K. Kellogg Foundation has announced the appointment of ALEJANDRA GARDUNO MARTINEZ as director of its Latin America and Caribbean programs. Based in WKKF's Mexico City office, Garduño Martínez will lead the foundation's regional grantmaking priorities — thriving children, working families, and equitable communities — in Mexico, Haiti, and Latin America and the Caribbean more broadly. Garduño Martínez joined WKKF as a program manager in 2012; prior to that, she was a project director for Fundación para la Productividad en el Campo A.C. in Mexico City.
The Kirkpatrick Family Fund, the largest affiliated fund in the Oklahoma City Community Foundation, has announced the election of choreographer, curator, educator, and dancer LARRY KEIGWIN to its board. The founder and artistic director of KEIGWIN + COMPANY in New York City, Keigwin has developed educational initiatives including seasonal intensives at the Juilliard School and is director of dance and co-founder of Green Box and the Green Box Arts Festival in Colorado.
The Center for Disaster Philanthropy has announced the election of John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation vice president and chief financial officer KENNETH M. JONES II as board chair. Jones has served on CDP's board for five years, including as treasurer since 2017, and previously held leadership roles at the Annie E. Casey Foundation, Danya International, Ford Motor Company, Pfizer Corporation, and Prudential, and serves on the boards of several nonprofits, including Candid. He succeeds LORI BERTMAN, a co-founder of CDP and chief executive of the Irene W. and C.B. Pennington Foundation. CDP also announced the election of three new members to the board: TIFFANY BENJAMIN, senior director of social impact and president of the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation; TRAVIS CAMPBELL, senior manager at Advanced Micro Devices; and HEATHER GERONEMUS, director of corporate affairs and corporate social responsibility at the Ultimate Kronos Group.
UNCF has announced the election to its board of KEN MEHLMAN, partner, global head of public affairs, and co-head of KKR Global Impact at global investment firm KKR. Mehlman spent a dozen years in national politics and government service, including as chair of the Republican National Committee and campaign manager of President George W. Bush's 2004 re-election campaign, and serves on the boards of Mount Sinai Hospital of New York, Franklin & Marshall College, Teach For America, and Seizing Every Opportunity (SEO).
