The William T. Grant Foundation has announced the election of SCOTT EVANS as board chair, succeeding RUSSELL PENNOYER, who served from 2015 to 2021 and will now chair the Finance and Investment Committee. Evans joined the board in 2013 and has served as chair of the Finance and Investment Committee since 2018. He currently serves on the Investment Advisory Committee of UNOPS, a nonprofit based in Copenhagen, Denmark, and is a trustee of the YMCA Retirement Fund. He previously served as deputy comptroller for asset management and CIO for the City of New York Pension Systems, executive vice president of TIAA-CREF, and president of its asset management subsidiaries.
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation has announced the election of LISA BAKER to its board. Baker is founder of BakerIE (Baker International Exhibits), a nonprofit focused on supporting artists in the creation and production of large-scale projects, and has often mentored emerging artists, helping to develop their careers by providing housing, funding, and exhibition opportunities. She also serves on committees and advisory boards of the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University and the Columbia University Irving Medical Center and in 2018 was appointed to the New York State Council of the Arts.
The Joyce Foundation in Chicago has announced that NINA VINIK will be stepping down as director of the foundation's Gun Violence Prevention & Justice Reform program at the end of June after thirteen years. During her tenure, Vinik helped launch seminal research behind firearms licensing, extreme risk-protection orders, and other violence-reduction measures; research into the public's attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors toward guns and gun violence; and efforts to build grassroots organizing capacity among advocacy groups. She also catalyzed new sources of support for the gun safety movement through the creation and leadership of the Fund for a Safer Future. She will be succeeded by TIM DALY, currently the senior program officer overseeing the foundation's gun policy portfolio.
The Kavli Foundation has announced AMY BERNARD as director of life sciences, effective August 6. Bernard will set the strategic vision for the program and leverage synergies with the physical sciences and science and society programs to advance the foundation's mission; oversee the seven Kavli Institutes in neuroscience, scientific society partnerships, and convenings; and represent the foundation in initiatives such as the National Institutes of Health's BRAIN Initiative, the International Brain Initiative, and Neurodata Without Borders. She has worked in bioscience and technology at academic and nonprofit research organizations for more than thirty years, most recently as the director of science and technology strategy at the Allen Institute, which she joined in 2005.
The Open Society Foundations has announced that MARY FITZGERALD, former editor-in-chief and CEO of the global news outlet openDemocracy, will assume the newly created role of director of information democracy. Fitzgerald will lead the organization's work to advance open society values at the intersection of journalism, technology, political accountability, and free expression, including by holding powerful digital actors accountable, exploring new business models for media, and protecting the rights of journalists, who are increasingly under attack for their work.
The William Penn Foundation has announced that ANDREW JOHNSON, the founding program director of the Watershed Protection Program, will retire at the end of June after twenty years with the foundation. Johnson oversaw research, data collection, monitoring, and advocacy with watershed-wide implications; on-the-ground restoration and preservation work and monitoring in specific subwatersheds in the Delaware River basin; and efforts to build public support for watershed protection by engaging people involved in outdoor activities on the Circuit, the greater Philadelphia area's 750-mile regional trail network.
The Perenchio Foundation in Los Angeles has named STEPHANIA RAMIREZ as its first executive director. Ramirez joins the foundation after nine years at the California Community Foundation, where she was senior program officer of strategic initiatives and helped oversee the LA Arts Relief & Recovery Fund, the largest-ever pooled private investment for arts nonprofits in Los Angeles County. She brings more than fifteen years of experience working with foundations and nonprofits leading a variety of cross-sector outreach, civic engagement, and fundraising campaigns.
New York City-based Robin Hood has announced the appointment of RICHARD BUERY, JR. as CEO effective September 1, succeeding Wes Moore, who left the organization in May. Buery currently serves as the CEO of Robin Hood's community partner Achievement First, a network of thirty-seven charter schools in Brooklyn, New York; Connecticut; and Rhode Island. He previously served as New York City's deputy mayor for strategic policy initiatives and helped develop Pre-K for All, a universal afterschool program; launched two hundred community school partnerships; managed the city's mental health reform initiative; and founded the Mayor's Office of Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprises. Robin Hood COO Derek Ferguson will continue to serve as interim CEO until September.
The Gary Sinise Foundation has announced the appointment of MIKE THIRTLE as CEO effective July 12, succeeding U.S. Air Force General (ret.) ROBIN RAND. Thirtle served for more than twenty years as an active-duty and reserve officer in the U.S. Air Force, spent twelve years in leadership positions at the RAND Corporation, and most recently served as president and CEO of Bethesda Lutheran Communities, a national organization that provides homes and other services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The Opportunity Network, a New York City-based nonprofit that works with students from historically underrepresented communities to develop the skills, knowledge, and passion they need to achieve their college and career goals, has announced the addition of three board members: Idyllic Partners founder and chief investment officer DAVID CHIANG, AMC Networks chief diversity, equity, and inclusion officer AISHA THOMAS-PETIT, and Deloitte partner KIM WELCH.
