The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation has announced that chief investment officer JEFFREY HEIL will retire at the end of the year after eighteen years in the role. As the foundation's first CIO, he oversaw the DDCF endowment's growth from $1.6 billion in 2003 to $2.4 billion in 2021, enabling the distribution of more than $1.2 billion in grants during that period; spearheaded the diversification of the foundation's portfolio; and established its impact investing program. Heil will be succeeded by deputy chief investment officer LEENA BHUTTA, who joined DDCF in 2019 after serving as director of alternative investments at the Hollyhock Foundation.

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation has announced the appointment of TY WOODFOLK as the institution's first chief culture and inclusion officer (CCIO) and TRISH JEFFERS as deputy director, human resources, effective September 7. Woodfolk, who previously served as director of human resources, diversity, and inclusion at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, will oversee the implementation of the Guggenheim's Diversity, Equity, Access, and Inclusion Action Plan; advance strategic thinking around employee culture and engagement; and develop practices to create a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming work environment. Jeffers, who has served as interim human services director at the Guggenheim, will provide oversight and strategic direction to all human resource functions, lead planning related to change-management strategies, and build policies to champion an environment that promotes team building and effective cross-organizational communication and collaboration.

The Houston Endowment has announced the election of DARRYL L. WILSON and GEORGE LEVAN to serve on its board. Wilson is president and founder of the Wilson Collective, a business advisory firm investing in small businesses and providing management consulting services to diverse corporate clients. Levan is chair and CEO of the Levan Group and co-founder of High Fashion Home; he has been actively involved in urban retail and mixed-use development as the founder of Crosspoint Properties.

The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation has announced the election of KAREN DANIEL, ANITA NEWTON, and PAUL J. SCHOFER to its board. Daniel is a retired executive director, CFO, and president of the global finance & technology solutions division of engineering, consulting and construction services firm Black & Veatch. Newton is chief innovation officer at CommunityAmerica, a $4 billion credit union headquartered in Kansas City. Schofer is president and CEO of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, a position he has held since June 2014, after serving as vice president of operations and CFO.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has announced the appointment of FARAH JASMINE GRIFFIN and CLINT SMITH as its 2021 Fellows in Residence. Griffin is Columbia University's inaugural chair of African American and African diaspora studies and the author or editor of eight books, including the landmark work on the culture of the Great Migration, Who Set You Flowin?: The African-American Migration Narrative. Smith is a poet, staff writer for The Atlantic, and the author of How the Word Is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America. The two fellows will serve through August 2022 and pursue their own research and writing as well as advise on programs, convenings, and conversations in collaboration with foundation leadership and staff.

The William Penn Foundation has announced the appointment of STUART A. CLARKE as its new program director of watershed protection. Clarke will oversee a $30 million annual grant portfolio, which includes investments in research, data gathering, and advocacy focused on priority stressors across the Delaware River watershed; targeted land protection and restoration; and efforts to broaden equitable public access to and engagement with the basin's rivers and streams. He previously served as vice president of strategic initiatives at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Studies and as executive director of the Town Creek Foundation, which supported environmental advocacy work in Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay area before sunsetting at the end of 2019.

The Warner Music Group / Blavatnik Family Foundation Social Justice Fund has announced the appointment of LORELEI WILLIAMS as its first executive director. Based in New York, Williams will serve as an employee of Moore Impact, the fund's fiscal sponsor. In her new role, Williams will work to create real change in the lives of historically underserved and marginalized populations by investing in organizations at the forefront of that work. She previously served as senior vice president of grant programs at Comic Relief U.S., a nonprofit that uses the power of entertainment to help eliminate world poverty.

The Alliance for Justice in Washington, D.C., has announced the appointment of RAKIM H.D. BROOKS as its next president, succeeding founding president NAN ARON, who announced in January that she would step down after leading the organization for forty-two years. Brooks currently is campaign manager for the ACLU's Systemic Equality Campaign and served as a member of the Biden-Harris transition team; he previously served as a policy advisor for the Treasury Department during the Obama administration. He began his career as a C. Edwin Baker Fellow at Demos, and currently serves on the advisory board for the Brown Center for Slavery and Justice and on the board of Getting Out, Staying Out in his native East Harlem.

Teens for Food Justice, a nonprofit focused on ensuring access to healthy, fresh, and affordable produce grown with hydroponic farming techniques on five New York City school campuses, has announced the addition of three members to its board: ALEJANDRO MUÑOZ-SUAREZ, ALEXANDRA GALINDEZ, and NORAH YAHYA. Muñoz-Suarez is CEO of Fuku; Galindez is CEO of ROAR Beverages; and Yahya is senior government affairs officer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Their terms began in June.

Westchester Jewish Community Services has announced the election of three new members to its board: JOEL BECKMAN, STEVEN BECKMAN, and JULIAN GOMEZ. Joel Beckman co-founded Greenbriar Equity Group, L.P. and, prior to that, was a managing director and partner at Goldman Sachs; Steven Beckman leads Global Creator Representation Partnerships at YouTube; and Gomez is general counsel and chief compliance officer at Sojitz Corporation of America and previously served on the WJCS board from June 2008 through February 2014.

UnidosUS has announced the addition of four new members to its board and the election of LUIS GRANADOS as board chair. Granados is CEO of Mission Economic Development Agency and previously served as vice chair of the board. The new members are JAY BHATT, principal at JDB Strategies in Chicago; MARICELA GARCIA, CEO of UnidosUS Affiliate Gads Hill Center in Chicago; ARTHUR J. OCHOA, senior vice president and chief advancement officer of Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles; and MYRNA SOTO, founder and CEO of Apogee Executive Advisors LLC in Hollywood, Florida.

And PND notes the passing of THOMAS PAYZANT, former board chair of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, on July 25 at the age of 80. A lifelong educator whose work was guided by his deep belief in the potential of every student to succeed, Payzant served as superintendent of several districts, including Boston Public Schools, which won the 2006 Broad Prize for Urban Education, and as assistant secretary for elementary and secondary education in the Clinton administration. From 2006 to 2012 he taught at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, with a focus on urban school district reform, education leadership, and advancing ways to connect research, policy, and practice in urban school districts.

"The millions of young people whose lives he improved, the thousands of educators he made better, and the many he mentored and loved owe Tom a deep debt of gratitude," said Carnegie Foundation president Timothy Knowles. "And I am certain Tom would want us to express that gratitude by fighting even harder to improve the quality of schooling for those who depend on it the most."
