People in the News (1/12/14): Appointments and Promotions
The W.K. Kellogg Foundation has announced the selection of DONALD G. WILLIAMSON as vice president of finance and treasurer; the election of BOBBY D. MOSER as board chair; and the re-election of RAMON MURGUIA, WENDA WEEKES MOORE, GAIL C. CHRISTOPHER, KATHRYN A. KRECKE, JOANNE KRELL, JAMES McHALE, LINH NGUYEN, CARLA D. THOMPSON, and JOEL WITTENBERG to its board. Williamson, who has served as the director of financial services at the foundation since June 2012, previously was vice president of finance and operations at the Beaumont Foundation.
The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has announced the appointment of EVAN MICHELSON as a program officer. In his new role, Michelson will be responsible for strategy development and grantmaking in the foundation’s energy program and overseeing the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (IV), and will help manage the foundation’s support for basic research in the natural sciences. Previously a director at the Markle Foundation, Michelson earlier served as an associate director at the Rockefeller Foundation, as a research associate at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, and as a Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Graduate Fellow at the National Academies.
The Walton Family Foundation has announced that SCOTT BURNS is retiring as director of its environment program. Burns has worked at the foundation for seven years and helped get its conservation program off the ground. The foundation is working with the Explore Company to search for a replacement and has named deputy director MARGARET BOWMAN as acting director in the interim.
The Arcus Foundation has announced the appointment of THOMAS W. NICHOLS as vice president of finance and operations. Nichols, most recently chief financial officer and vice president for finance and administration at the Heinz Center, earlier served as CFO at the African Wildlife Foundation and the World Wildlife Fund. He serves on the boards of Netcentric Campaigns, the Sitar Arts Center, and the Peter Fox Project, of which he is a founding member.
The Murphy Family Foundation has announced the appointment of MELODY MURPHY THOMAS as president Thomas's "intelligence, experience, and enthusiasm for involving the next generation of the Murphy Family are great assets as we grow into the future,” said exiting president RITA CARFAGNA. Thomas noted that she is “looking forward to working with the current trustees and the next generation of the family as together we strive to increase the impact of the foundation’s philanthropic efforts in the greater Cleveland area.”
The Robert Sterling Clark Foundation has announced the election of PHILIP LI to its board. Li, currently chief administrative officer at the Century Foundation, previously helped launch the Brooklyn Community Foundation and served as executive director of the Coro New York Leadership Center and as senior managing director of Changing Our World. Li began his career in the private sector, working at Merrill Lynch International and Moody's Investors Service, and currently serves on the boards of Philanthropy New York, the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, the Mary J Hutchins Foundation, and the Bulova Stetson Fund.
The Commonwealth Fund has announced the election of KATHRYN HASLANGER to its board. Haslanger, chief executive officer of the Jewish Association Serving the Aging, has spent more than thirty years in the healthcare policy, research, and delivery fields, holding leadership roles at a range of health-related organizations, including the Visiting Nurse Service of New York, Maimonides Medical Center, and the United Hospital Fund of New York.
The Williamsburg Health Foundation has announced the appointment of PAUL W. GERHARDT and ROBERT SINGLEY as trustees and ALLISON BRODY as director of community resource development and engagement. Brody, who joined the foundation on January 1, previously worked as an independent grantwriter and served as director of development at Child Development Resources. Gerhardt, an attorney, is exiting chair of the James City County Economic Development Authority. Singley, a real estate broker and local business leader, serves as board chair for the Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance.
In other news, Northern California Grantmakers has announced the appointment of DAVID GRECO as interim president and CEO. Greco was most recently vice president of the Nonprofit Finance Fund, where he led much of the organization's funder services work, including partnerships with NCG and other grantmaker associations. Earlier, he served as vice president of the Louth Leadership Institute, as corporate and foundation relations manager for the National Wildlife Federation, and as director of programs for the Horatio Alger Association. He will serve in his new role until the NCG board completes a nationwide search for a permanent chief executive later this year.
