People in the News (4/03/05): Appointments and Promotions

The Minneapolis-based McKnight Foundation has named JEANNINE BALFOUR and MARIAM MOHAMED as program officers in its Children and Families program area. Balfour, associate community liaison at the Northwest Area Foundation, previously served as HIV prevention coordinator for the Louisiana office of public health and as program manager for Population Services International in Dar es Salaam, Tanaznia. Mohamed, executive director of the Somali Parent Teacher Association in Minneapolis, was previously an instructor at the Owatonna Workforce Development Center in Minnesota and a college math instructor in the United Arab Emirates.

The Cincinnati-based Scripps Howard Foundation has named PATTY COTTINGHAM as vice president of administration and SUSAN PORTER as vice president of programs. Cottingham, executive director of the foundation for nine years, has over thirty years' experience in newspaper and charitable foundation business administration. Porter previously served as editor of Scripps Howard News, the company's employee magazine, and has been a trustee of the foundation for twenty years.

The Minneapolis-based Minnesota Council on Foundations has named JANE FERGUSON OTIS as vice president of communications and information services and CHUCK PETERSON as vice president of member services and operations. Otis, who has held senior-level positions at a number of public relations/advertising firms, including Padilla and Speer, Rowland Worldwide, Strother Communications Group, and the Foley Group, was previously press secretary to the mayor of Minneapolis. Peterson, who previously worked for the council as an operations executive, also has served as director of finance and administration and director of special projects at Artspace Projects, Inc., as executive director of Grace House of Minneapolis, and as director of development for Theatre de la Jeune Lune, the Dale Warland Singers, and Film in the Cities.

The New York City-based Birthright Israel Foundation has named JAY GOLAN as president and CEO. Golan, a senior director at Carnegie Hall, has worked in the nonprofit sector for over two decades, including stints at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the New York Public Library, and WNYC-New York Public Radio.

The Carter Center in Atlanta has named JOHN MOORES as chair. Moores, owner of the San Diego Padres baseball team and chairman of the California Board of Regents, founded BMC Software after working as a computer programmer for IBM and Shell Oil. He also founded the River Blindness Foundation, which was incorporated into the center in 1997. Moores, an original member of the Carter Center board, replaces former President JIMMY CARTER, who founded the center in 1982 and who will remain a member of the board, as will his wife, ROSALYNN CARTER, who has stepped down as vice-chair.

The March of Dimes Southern Nevada Division in Las Vegas has named DAVID KELLERMAN to its board. Kellerman, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Business Bank of Nevada, worked for Second Bancorp in Warren, Ohio, for twenty-three years. He also has served on the boards of the Trumbull County United Way and the Trumbull Memorial Hospital Foundation, and was chairman of the Howland Township Zoning Commission.

In other news, Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, has named STEVEN LAWRY as president. Lawry, director of the Ford Foundation's office of management services, previously led its operations in the Middle East and North and South America. He has also worked with USAID and the United Nations, and developed the African Land Tenure Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he received his doctorate in environmental studies.
