People in the News (4/19/15): Appointments and Promotions

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has announced the appointment of BAHIA RAMOS as director of its arts program. Ramos, who will report to Victoria Rogers, the foundation’s newly named vice president for art, currently serves as Knight's program director for community foundations. Previously, she served as government and community affairs director for the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the Brooklyn Children's Museum.

The Ford Foundation has announced the appointment of KRISTEN JARVIS as chief of staff. Jarvis, currently deputy senior advisor and director of external relations for First Lady Michelle Obama, has worked with the First Family since 2005, starting as special assistant to then-Senator Barack Obama’s chief of staff. She became a special assistant to Michelle Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign, and since then has helped create dozens of partnerships with high-profile companies, organizations, and constituencies to advance the first lady’s initiatives, including Joining Forces, Reach Higher, and Let’s Move!

The David and Lucile Packard Foundation has announced the appointment of CHAD ENGLISH as science program officer. In that position, English will be responsible for the science sub-program within the foundation’s conservation and science program. English has spent the last decade working at the intersection of science, policy, and communications, most recently as director of science policy outreach at COMPASS, a Packard Foundation grantee. Earlier, he was a John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellow attached to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation and worked for the House Committee on Science in several areas, including ocean science, natural resource management, and science and technology policy. He will succeed KAI LEE, who has been with the foundation since 2007 and is retiring later this year.

The Heinz Endowments has announced the appointment of ANDREW McELWAINE as program director for sustainability and the environment, a new position, and the promotion of PHILLIP JOHNSON to the role of program director for science and environment. McElwaine, currently president and CEO of the American Farmland Trust, previously was president and CEO of the Conservancy of Southwest Florida and the Pennsylvania Environmental Council. Earlier, he served for six years as the endowments’ first environment program director. Johnson, currently interim director of the endowments' environment program, has worked for the endowments as a program officer since 2009.

The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation has announced the appointment of KAAMEL NURI as program manager of American Explorers, one of its operating programs. Nuri currently is executive director of the Arthur M. Blank Family YMCA in Atlanta, where he has worked in progressively senior roles since 1990. Earlier, he was a program director and case manager at Roxbury Youthworks in Boston. He currently serves on the board of Atlanta Promise Neighborhood and the Morehouse School of Medicine MPH program advisory board.

The Houston Endowment has announced the appointment of DAVID GOODMAN as director of evaluation and learning. Goodman currently serves as director of data governance at Teach for America and, before joining that organization, worked as a researcher at Edvance Research,  managed external research and evaluation for the Texas Education Agency, and was a lecturer and instructor at Rice University and Houston Community College.

The Ball Brothers Foundation has announced the appointment of RICH SPISAK as senior program officer. Spisak, who has worked at the foundation since 2008 as a program officer in the areas of education and the environment, previously served as a senior development officer at Ball State University and was a football coach at the University of Colorado and Miami University, his almae matres.

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has announced the election of ANDRÉS ANTIONIO ALONSO Alonso as board chair and HAYAGREEVA RAO as a board member. Alonso, a member of the foundation’s board for nearly four years, is a professor of practice at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Previously, he served as CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools, was chief of staff and deputy chancellor for teaching and learning at the New York City Department of Education, and taught emotionally disturbed special education adolescents and English language learners in Newark, New Jersey. Rao, known as "Huggy," is the Atholl McBean Professor of Organizational Behavior and Human Resources at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business and is a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences, the Sociological Research Association, and the Academy of Management. He also teaches organizational change, design, leadership, and customer-focused culture to MBA and executive audiences.

NANCY LUBLIN has announced her planned departure this October from DoSomething.org. Lublin, who has led the youth volunteering organization for twelve years, is leaving to take the helm at Crisis Text Line, also in New York City.  She will be succeeded by ARIA FINGER, currently the organization's chief operating officer.

In other news, the Alliance for Nonprofit Management has announced the departure of national program manager JENN LAMMERS and the appointment of ROBYN STEELY as interim program manager. Lammers, who was the organization’s first paid staff member in six years, is joining Northeastern University as a part-time lecturer and will continue with her current teaching responsibilities at Hellenic College and Holy Cross Seminary. Steely, most recently executive director of Write Around Portland,  began her career in membership and communications work at several organizations, including the Service Employees International Union in Oregon.
