People in the News (4/27/14): Appointments and Promotions

The California HealthCare Foundation has announced the appointment of SOPHIA CHANG as vice president of programs. Chang, who worked at the foundation from 2003 to 2013 as director of its Better Chronic Disease Care Program, most recently served as vice president and medical director of population health solutions for Chicago-based healthcare company Accretive Health and previously held leadership positions at several organizations, including the Veterans Health Administration, the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, and the San Francisco Department of Public Health. In addition to her new job, Chang will continue to practice general internal medicine at San Francisco General Hospital. "Sophia brings with her a deep understanding of philanthropy, the medical system, and CHCF itself," said Dr. Sandra R. Hernández, who became president and CEO of the foundation in January. "She needs no ramp up time to help me drive the foundation forward in these exceptional times."

The M. J. Murdock Charitable Trust in Vancouver, Washington, has announced the appointment of LORIN DUNLOP as program director, effective in late June. Dunlop, most recently coordinator of the Oregon Criminal Justice grants program in public safety and offender re-entry, has been involved in nonprofit work for more than twenty years in the areas of arts and culture, education, and health, and currently is active as a volunteer in her community and parish, including service as an arts literacy instructor for the Lake Oswego School District.

Neiman Marcus has announced the appointment of MIMI CRUME STERLING as vice president of corporate communications and public relations, in which position she will be responsible for public and media relations, special events, and charitable giving for parent corporation Neiman Marcus Group. Sterling previously held positions at Hearst, Assouline, HL Group, and Hermès.

The National Council of Nonprofits has announced a new slate of board officers and board members whose terms will extend through the organization’s 2016 annual meeting. The newly appointed board officers are KYLE CALDWELL, director of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation’s Pathways Out of Poverty program, as chair; RENNY FAGAN, president and CEO of the Colorado Nonprofit Association, as vice chair and treasurer; and MARY ELLEN JACKSON, executive director of the New Hampshire Center for Nonprofits, as secretary. The new board appointments are DOUG BAUER, executive director of the Clark Foundation; HENRY BERMAN, chief executive officer of Exponent Philanthropy (formerly the Association of Small Foundations); CHRIS BRAY, chief executive officer of the Utah Nonprofits Association; ANN HINDERY, chief executive officer of the Nonprofit Association of the Midlands; and VAL PORTER, director of the Foundation Center’s Atlanta office.

In other news, the Foundation Center, PND’s parent organization, has announced the election of DEBORAH HOOVER to its board. Hoover, president and CEO of the Burton D. Morgan Foundation in Hudson, Ohio, also serves as advisory board chair of the Foundation Center's library/learning center in Cleveland and chair of the Fund for Our Economic Future, a philanthropic collaboration that works to align and maximize resources and leadership to advance a growing, opportunity-rich economy for the people of Northeast Ohio. Hoover, a lawyer, currently serves on the board of Western Reserve Academy and is a member of the National Council for the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.
