People in the News (5/29/05): Appointments and Promotions

The John Templeton Foundation in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, has named ARTHUR SCHWARTZ as executive vice president, a new position at the foundation. Schwartz has been on the foundation's senior management staff since 1995. He previously taught at Harvard's graduate school of education and served as director of dropout prevention programs for the school district of Philadelphia.

The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation in Durham has named ROBERTA BOWMAN to its board. Bowman, vice president of External Relations for Duke Energy, chairs the company's business women's network and is president of the Duke Energy Foundation. She also serves on the board of Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont.

The Blue Shield of California Foundation in San Francisco has named BRENDA SOLORZANO as director of health access, LISA PAYNE SIMON as director of health and technology, and BRITTANY IMWALLE as director of finance and administration. Solorzano previously held leadership positions at the California Endowment, the California HealthCare Foundation, and the California Medical Association. Payne Simon previously worked at the California HealthCare Foundation, where she helped launch its quality initiative. Imwalle, who has experience in both the healthcare industry and in management consulting, previously worked at Booz Allen Hamilton.

The Dallas-based Parkland Foundation has named DAVID E. KRAUSE as president and chief executive officer. Krause, currently senior vice president for development at Children's Medical Center Dallas, formerly served as vice president, chief operating officer, and planning and donor relations director at the Baylor Health Care System Foundation, as executive director of the Highlands Medical Foundation, and as executive director of the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Church. He replaces Barbara Lord Watkins, who will become president emeritus of the organization when she retires on June 3.

The Nature Conservancy has named WILLIAM KUNZE as director of its Pennsylvania chapter. Kunze, recently chief of the spectrum and competition policy division at the wireless telecommunications bureau of the Federal Communications Commission, previously served as a management consultant with McKinsey & Company.

In other news, the Asia Society Southern California in Los Angeles has named DONALD TANG as chairman and DEBORAH JORDAN as executive director. Tang, who served on the society's board last fall, serves on the board of Bear, Stearns & Co. and is chair of Bear Stearns Asia. He also serves on the boards of the California Institute of Technology, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the RAND Center for Asia Pacific Policy, the California Science Center, and the United Way of Greater Los Angeles. Jordan, who joined the society this March, previously served as director of external affairs and events for the Milken Institute, where she was executive producer of its global conference.
