The Gill Foundation has announced the appointment of COURTNEY CUFF as president and CEO. Cuff, currently CEO and co-founder of the Western Conservation Foundation, previously served as a strategic consultant to several independent foundations, as director for the Pacific regional office of the National Parks Conservation Association, and as legislative director for Friends of the Earth. She will join the foundation in October, succeeding TIM SWEENEY.

The Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust has announced the planned retirement of HARRIET IVEY, its founding president and CEO for the past fifteen years, effective February 2014. "Harriet has been a gifted and inspired leader in helping create this trust," said trust chair Carol Peden Schilling. "She has given it a living, breathing presence in our two states, and she has made it a magnificent legacy not only to its benefactor, Nina Mason Pulliam, but, in a sense, also to herself and the years of tender care she has devoted to the trust. We will miss her."

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation has announced the appointment of MIGUEL ANGEL JORGE as the first managing director and full-time employee of 50in10, a multi-stakeholder collaboration whose goal is to bring 50 percent of the world's fisheries under sustainable management within ten years. Jorge, most recently director of the National Geographic Society's Ocean Initiative, earlier served as director of WWF-International's Marine Program and worked on marine and freshwater conservation issues in Latin America and the Caribbean and on large-scale conservation planning for the Gulf of California, the Galapagos, and the Mesoamerican Reef.

The Surdna Foundation has announced the appointment of GEORGE SOULE as director of communications, a new position. Soule, previously manager of strategic communications at the Carnegie Corporation of New York, earlier served as an associate director at the Rockefeller Foundation and was a vice president at Edelman Public Relations Worldwide. "The Surdna Foundation recognizes the powerful role strategic communication can play in creating a bigger impact on the issues we're working to advance," said the foundation's president, Phil Henderson. "George will help amplify the voices of our grantees — whether through storytelling or leveraging the latest digital tools — and double down on the foundation's commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration across its programs and the fields in which we work."

The McKnight Foundation has hired KAYING VANG as program assistant for its Collaborative Crop Research program. Vang, most recently a program associate at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs, earlier worked for Mano a Mano International in St. Paul and Bolivia, and for the Peace Corps in Guatemala.

The United Way of the National Capital Area has announced the appointment of ROSIE ALLEN-HERRING as president and chief executive, the Washington Post reports. Herring, currently managing director of Fannie Mae's Office of Community Investment and Engagement and a newly-appointed board member at the Washington Area Women's Foundation, will take over as the organization shifts from a focus on workplace giving toward online giving. "We were looking for someone who could internalize and articulate a clear vision...and execute what has become a complex business model," said board member Ted Davies. "She knows the community and has had a big impact."

The Minnesota Council on Foundations has announced the appointment of TRISTA HARRIS as president. Harris, most recently executive director of the Headwaters Foundation for Justice, is chair of the national board of advisors of Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy and writes about generational change in philanthropy on her blog New Voices of Philanthropy. Earlier, she served as a program officer at the Saint Paul Foundation and the Minnesota Community Foundation (now Minnesota Philanthropy Partners), as development director at nonprofit Portico Healthnet, and in research and management positions at a number of other nonprofits.

The World Resources Institute has announced the appointment of DAVID WASKOW as head of its International Climate Initiative. Waskow, most recently climate change program director at Oxfam America, earlier served as the international program director for Friends of the Earth. He has testified before Congress on responses to climate change and on trade issues, and is a frequent go-to source for the media on climate finance.

In other news, PND notes the passing of philanthropist JOAN PARKER in Boston this week. Parker, who supported the arts and LGBTQ issues as a writer, donor, and activist, was also a muse extraordinaire to her late husband, mystery writer Robert B. Parker, and wrote television scripts based on his books. Together, they founded independent film company Pearl Productions and co-wrote a number of books, includuing A Year at the Races and Three Weeks in Spring. "For me, she was a complete role model of how to live your life: large, and with commitment and fearlessness," said their son, Dan.
