People in the News (7/24/05): Appointments and Promotions
The California Endowment in Woodland Hills has named SID VOORAKKARA as program officer for San Diego, Orange, and Imperial counties. Voorakkara, formerly a political and corporate consultant for the Democratic National Committee, the United Nations Foundation, Californians for Tax Fairness, and Home Front Communications, also has served as field director for the United Nations Foundation's public affairs department and as a communications advisor to former House Minority Leader Richard Gephardt.
The Minneapolis-based McKnight Foundation has named RICHARD D. McFARLAND to its board. McFarland, a former president and CEO of RBC Dain Rauscher, which he continues to serve in an advisory role, has also served on the board of the St. Paul-based Bush Foundation, as a trustee of the Minneapolis Foundation, and on the University of Minnesota's Investments Advisory Committee. He is only the third non-family board member in the foundation's history.
The Triangle Community Foundation in Durham, North Carolina, has named ANDREA BAZAN-MANSON as president. Executive director and founding member of Latino advocacy group El Pueblo Inc., Bazan-Manson serves on the boards of the John Rex Endowment, the N.C. Center for Nonprofits, and the Center for Community Self Help. She is also involved with several North Carolina government and community groups, including the Governor's Advisory Council on Hispanic/Latino Affairs, and is the first Latina to lobby the North Carolina General Assembly. She replaces Shannon St. John, who is stepping down after twenty-one years as the foundation's leader.
The Baltimore-based T. Rowe Price Associates Foundation has named STACEY VAN HORN as executive director. Van Horn, formerly manager of donor relations at T. Rowe Price's program for charitable giving, holds a master's degree in social work from the University of Maryland.
The Blue Shield of California Foundation in San Francisco has named MARYBETH CARTER as director of its Blue Shield Against Violence program, a new position. Carter will resign as executive director of the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault after leading the organization for seven years, and will be replaced by Ellen W. Yin-Wycoff.
The St. Paul-based Northwest Area Foundation has named LOUIS FORS HILL and TED STRONG to its board, and CORNELIA BUTLER FLORA as board chair. Hill, chairman of Rockwood Capital Management, is the son of Louis W. Hill, Sr., who established the foundation in 1934, and previously served as a foundation trustee from 1968 to 1977 and from 1994 to 2003. Strong, a member of the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation, has worked as an environmental manager for several reservoir and hydroelectric projects, and has also served on the President's Council on Sustainable Development and as a technical advisor to the President's Commission on Indian Reservation Economies. Flora, director of the North Central Regional Center for Rural Development at Iowa State University, has been a foundation board member since 1998 and was vice chair of the board from 2002 to 2005.
In other news, the Ms. Foundation for Women in New York City has named KATHERINE M. GROVER as board chair. Grover, a former vice president and stockbroker with Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, has been an advisor to the foundation since 1987 and joined its board in 2001. She is, in addition, president of the Wellspring Development Foundation and serves on the boards of Wellesley College Centers for Women and Save the Children's Council on Children in Emergencies and Crisis.
