People in the News (7/31/11): Appointments and Promotions
The Los Angeles-based California Endowment has announced the appointment of CASTLE REDMOND as program manager for its Building Healthy Communities plan and the elections of STEVE PONTELL and WALTER L. BUSTER to its board. Redmond, who formerly worked as a program manager, case manager, and teacher for the Oakland Unified School District/City, earlier served as a commissioner for Alameda County's Human Relations Commission. PonTell, president of the La Jolla Institute, is also a managing member of Community Asset Recovery Enterprise and previously was involved in the startup and management of a number of entrepreneurial ventures in the Inland Empire. Buster, co-director of the Central Valley Educational Leadership Institute at California State University, Fresno, has over forty years' experience in K-12 education in California.
The Oakland-based California HealthCare Foundation has announced the appointment of SANDRA SHEWRY as director of its state health policy interests. Shewry, currently president and CEO of the Center for Connected Health Policy, previously served as an adviser on health reform implementation for the California Health and Human Services Agency. Her public sector service also includes tenure as director of the California Department of Health Care Services as well as senior positions with the National Governors Association and California's Managed Risk Medical Insurance Board.
The San Francisco-based Stuart Foundation has announced the appointment of CLAUDIA SANDOVAL as senior program officer in its education area. Sandoval, most recently senior associate at philanthropic advisory firm Hirsch & Associates, previously served as special assistant to Miami-Dade County Public Schools superintendent Rudy Crew. She currently serves on the San Francisco School Alliance Advisory Board and on the Mayor's After-School-for-All Council.
The Atlanta-based Southeastern Council of Foundations has announced JANINE LEE as president and CEO, effective September 1. Lee, president and CEO of the Southern Partners Fund, earlier served as vice president of education programs at the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation and as vice president of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation in Kansas City, Missouri. She is a co-founder of Grantmakers for Effective Organizations and serves on the board of the Skillbuilders Fund for Women and Girls.
Davlin Philanthropic Funds in Broadview Heights, Ohio, has announced the election of CLAIRE GAUDIANI to its board. Gaudiani, adjunct professor of philanthropy at New York University's Wagner School of Public Service and chair of Gaudiani Associates, formerly served as president of Connecticut College. She is a recognized champion for American philanthropy and is author of The Greater Good: How Philanthropy Drives the American Economy and Can Save Capitalism and Generosity Unbound.
The New York City-based Mertz Gilmore Foundation has announced the promotion of LEAH KRAUSS from arts consultant to program officer for its New York City dance program.
In other news, the Pittsburgh-based Alcoa Foundation has announced the election of RAYMOND B. MITCHELL, TIM D. MYERS, WILLIAM J. O'ROURKE, and SHANNON PARKS to its board. Mitchell is vice president of the Alcoa company and president of Alcoa's Power and Propulsion division. Myers is president of the company's Wheel and Transportation Products division. O'Rourk is vice president of Alcoa's Sustainability and Environment, Health and Safety division. And Parks leads the company's Environmental Science and Sustainable Technology program.
