Phil Knight’s foundation awarded $190 million in 2023
Nike co-founder Phil Knight’s foundation awarded $190 million in 2023, The Oregonian reports.
According to tax documents obtained by the Oregonian, the Knight Foundation—run by Knight and his wife, Penelope—holds more than $5 billion in assets as of the end of 2023—a year-over-year increase of more than $1 billion. Several awards were made in fulfillment of earlier commitments, including $100 million (of a $500 million pledge) to the University of Oregon for its Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact and a pair of grants to Stanford University: $40 million (of a $400 million pledge) for its Knight-Hennessy Scholars program and $20.5 million (of a $75 million pledge) for its Knight Initiative for Brain Resilience. Other grants awarded in 2023 included $7.5 million to the Providence St. Vincent Medical Foundation, $5 million to Self Enhancement Inc., and $5 million to Albina Head Start.
In addition to the foundation’s grants, the Knight family in 2023 helped launch the 1803 Fund—a nonprofit working to revitalize Portland’s historically Black Albina neighborhood—committing $400 million to the effort, which to date has invested $8 million in 11 Portland organizations.
