Philadelphia celebrities donate $7 million to local schools
Rapper Meek Mill, comedian Kevin Hart, and former Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael G. Rubin, all Philadelphia natives, have committed a total of $7 million to 60 private and parochial schools in Philadelphia, Billboard reports.
The gifts will support local education causes for the 2023-24 school year, with a majority of the funds contributing to scholarships for low-income students at private schools. A spokesperson for the trio did not specify which schools would be receiving funds but said scholarships will be concentrated in the South and North Philadelphia neighborhoods where the rapper and comedian grew up and attended school.
In recent years, Mill and Rubin have donated more than $17 million to local communities, including $15 million to 100 Philadelphia public schools in January 2022. Previously, they launched a $2 million scholarship fund to help area students during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mill confirmed the donation and its reach in a tweet, “Gotta get the whole trap booming too… we come from public schools side!!!!!”
