Point Foundation Awards Scholarships for LGBTQ Students
The Los Angeles-based Point Foundation, which provides college scholarships to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer youth, has announced its 2014 class of Point Scholars.
Each scholarship recipient will receive up to $25,000 a year over four years, including direct financial and programmatic assistance. In addition, each scholar will be paired with a mentor and will participate in leadership development training with fellow Point Scholars. Upon graduation, Point Scholars become part of the foundation's growing alumni network, connecting them with caring individuals and professional contacts across the country.
The foundation’s scholarship selection process requires candidates to demonstrate academic excellence, leadership skills, community involvement, and financial need. Priority is given to students who have lost the financial and social support of their families and/or communities as a result of revealing their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
In return for the funding, Point Scholars agree to maintain a high level of academic performance and give back to the LGBTQ community by completing an individual community service project each year. Some scholars also benefit from internship opportunities arranged by the foundation related to their fields of study.
"Helping hardworking and bright students afford the increasing cost of a college education is an investment in a better future for everyone," said Point Foundation executive director and CEO Jorge Valencia. "Embracing diversity in education — particularly empowering LGBTQ students — is necessary for building a more equitable and innovative society."
