St. Paul Academy Receives $15 Million Gift for New STEM Center

St. Paul Academy and Summit School in St. Paul, Minnesota, has announced a $15 million gift from alumnus Hugh K. Schilling toward construction of a new math and science center on the private K-12 school's Randolph campus.

The largest single donation ever made to an independent school in Minnesota will fund construction of a state-of-the-art math, science, engineering, and computer science facility totaling approximately 39,000 square feet, increasing the school’s space for math and science instruction by some 14,000 square feet. Construction is scheduled to begin in April 2017, with completion planned for August 2018. In recognition of the gift, the facility will be named the Hugh K. Schilling Math and Science Center.

Schilling is chairman of Horton Holding, Inc., which manufactures engine cooling systems. He is a 1943 SPA graduate and attended the University of Minnesota School of Engineering.

"We are grateful and humbled by Hugh’s generosity in making this gift, and appreciative of his vision of SPA as the premiere high school for educating Minnesota’s future scientists and engineers," said head of school Bryn Roberts. "As an engineer himself, Hugh understands the critical importance of quantitative learning and the need for instructional spaces that are both innovative and flexible. We are thrilled to have his support in building this state-of-the-art facility."
