Stonehill College Receives $2 Million for Sports Complex Expansion

Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts, has announced a $2 million gift toward an expansion of the Catholic college's athletics facility.

The gift from the Yawkey Foundation will be used to create the Lou Gorman Pavilion in the college's Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex. The Gorman Pavilion is part of a larger expansion project that includes adding 50,000 square feet to the complex to provide additional space for athletics, health, fitness, and exercise facilities.

The exhibition space will be designed to display and honor Gorman's commitment to the college and the Boston Red Sox, including his sports memorabilia and other items highlighting his long career in baseball.

Gorman was general manager of the Red Sox from 1984 to 1993 and later served as the organization's executive consultant for public affairs. He also served several terms as a member of the college's board of trustees and as chair of its annual fund. Gorman, who died in 2011, received many honors in recognition of his commitment to the college, including an honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree in 2002 and having the baseball field named in his honor.

"With the Yawkey Foundation's new commitment to name the Lou Gorman Pavilion, we are deeply honored to design a space that serves as a tribute to Lou's athletic career and memory," said Francis X. Dillon, Stonehill's vice president for advancement. "Creation of the pavilion is also a fitting way to honor the dedication that Lou, along with Tom and Jean Yawkey, demonstrated during their lifetimes to athletics, fitness, and personal well-being."
