Thirteen New Commitments Announced at 2013 Clinton Global Initiative Meeting
On the first day of the 2013 Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting, President Bill Clinton announced thirteen new commitments addressing a range of global challenges, from building urban resilience and providing educational resources, to combating malnutrition and improving access to health care.
New commitments announced on day one of the meeting include a $100 million pledge from the Rockefeller Foundation to enable at least a hundred cities to hire a chief resiliency officer (CROs) and advance their resiliency strategies and efforts. Part of the foundation's 100 Resilient Cities Centennial Challenge, the commitment — which was made in partnership with Swiss Re, the American Institute of Architects, Architecture for Humanity, and Palantir Technologies — also includes funds to create a network for CROs to share information and best practices designed to strengthen the ability of cities to prepare for and recover from the effects of climate change, seismic events, and/or terrorism. The 100 Resilient Cities Challenge will announce the first round of cities to join the network in December.
Other commitments announced on day one include a $10 million pledge by the Masimo Foundation for Ethics, Innovation, and Competition in Healthcare to fund the creation of the Patient Safety Movement Foundation, which will work to lower healthcare costs and improve safety in hospitals with the goal of reducing preventable deaths to zero by 2020; a commitment by the International Medical Corps to expand its "health care through training" model over the next two years to improve reproductive and maternal health, mental health, nutrition, and access to clean water and sanitation services and help communities prepare for and respond to emergencies and natural disasters; and a pledge by MASS Design Group, in partnership with Les Centres GHESKIO and the Barr, Deutsche Bank Americas, and Kimelman Family foundations, and others, to address the cholera epidemic in Haiti through the establishment of ten Health and Hydration Centers in Port-au-Prince. In addition, First Book, in partnership with Ashoka: Innovators for the Public, the World Bank Group, Feed the Children, World Vision International, and others, announced a commitment to distribute more than sixty million books, e-books, and other educational resources to children in need and to establish the First Book Marketplace as a resource center for educators.
"The dedication and passion of CGI members from the public, private, and nonprofit-sectors alike remind us that, when it comes to addressing global challenges, we are all in this together," said Chelsea Clinton. "In the next three days, I look forward to learning more about how the commitments made in years past are having an impact and seeing how the partnerships forged this year at CGI will attack some of the world's most pressing problems."
