Toronto East General Hospital Receives C$50 Million Gift
Toronto East General Hospital and the Toronto East General Hospital Foundation have announced a gift of C$50 million ($37.3 million) from Myron and Berna Garron to transform healthcare delivery for some of the highest-need residents in the metropolitan area.
The gift will enable Toronto East to improve coordination of care in the community through a partnership between the hospital and other local healthcare providers. To that end, the hospital will use the gift to purchase state-of-the-art equipment, including a new CT scanner; establish its first teaching and research chair positions; and fund studies designed to drive clinical innovation and improve patient care. In recognition of the gift, which the Garrons made in memory of their son, Michael, who was born at the hospital in 1962 and died at the age of 13 from a rare soft tissue disease, the primary facility in the newly renamed Toronto East Health Network will be named Michael Garron Hospital.
"Philanthropy plays an important role in our health system and today health care in East Toronto got a new name: the Michael Garron Hospital." said TEGH Foundation board chair Michael Burns "With this generous support from the Garrons, we are able to fund much-needed investments in patient care and innovation. Our hospital will be propelled to the global stage, making it an example of excellence, innovation, and inspiration around the world."
