Walmart Foundation awards $3 million to aid agriculture in India

The Walmart Foundation has announced grants totaling more than $3 million to enhance farmer incomes and build climate resilience across rural communities in India.

The grants will support sustainable agriculture practices and farmer producer organizations (FPOs) in the state of Maharashtra. Recipients include BAIF Development Research Foundation, which was awarded $1.6 million to improve livelihoods and gender integration through value chain initiatives in tribal regions with a focus on enhancing yield for existing crops, cultivating high-value vegetables and flowers, and improving livestock breed management; and Watershed Organisation Trust (WOTR), which will receive $1.2 million to establish resilient incomes for smallholder farmers in three districts—Jalna, Dharashiv, and Solapur. In addition, the Collective Good Foundation was awarded $500,000 to empower FPOs and drive climate-resilient growth for 10,000 farmers across five districts, with 70 percent of them being women.

“We support nonprofits in a way that goes beyond the fields. We're excited to invest in grantees’ potential to drive change,” said Walmart Foundation vice president Julie Gehrki. “Through these grants, we are helping create a farming ecosystem that is resilient, accessible and inclusive, thereby ensuring that every farmer, especially women, can use technology and sustainable practices to grow crops and invest in their own futures.”
