Washington Business Journal Announces D.C.'s Top Corporate Givers for 2004
According to the Washington Business Journal's annual survey of corporate philanthropy programs, the D.C. area's top fifty corporate donors contributed $139.4 million last year, up 10 percent from the $126.6 million given in 2003.
Sallie Mae topped the list with $30.9 million in contributions, a figure that included the creation of a $26 million fund to expand enrollment in local charter schools. Fannie Mae ranked second with $24.1 million in charitable contributions. McLean-based Freddie Mac fell from first place to third on the list, with $20.2 million in local contributions, a significant drop from the $39.5 million it gave in 2003.
Rounding out the top ten were telephone giant Verizon, Bethesda-based Chevy Chase Bank, health insurer Kaiser Permanente of Rockville, defense contractor Lockheed Martin, Exxon Mobil, construction firm Clark Enterprises, and Smith Barney/Citigroup.
