California HealthCare Foundation
Mission:
To support ideas and innovations to improve health care for all Californians.
Background:
With assets of more than $700 million, the California HealthCare Foundation distributes some $40 million in grants each year to help improve quality, increase efficiency, and lower the costs of health care in California. Established in 1996 after the Blue Cross of California was converted from a nonprofit organization to the for-profit WellPoint Health Networks, CHCF awards grants in four areas: the Better Chronic Disease Care Program, the Innovations for the Underserved Program, the Market and Policy Monitor Program, and the Health Reform and Public Programs Initiative.
Outstanding Web Features:
Visitors to the recently redesigned California HealthCare Foundation Web site can browse and save foundation graphs and charts and find publications by topic or publication date. The site also features grantmaking assessment and grantee perception reports, other recent financial reports, and links to the foundation's YouTube channel, Facebook page, and Twitter feed. In addition to its own Web site, the foundation maintains CaliforniaHealthline.org, a daily digest of healthcare news, policy, and opinion; iHealthBeat.org, which includes information on technology's impact on health care; CalHospitalCompare.org, a hospital rating resource for consumers; and CalQualityCare.org, which provides long-term care resources.
