Civil Rights Movement Veterans
Mission:
To provide a space where activists in the civil rights movement can "tell it like it was, the way we lived it, the way we saw it, the way we still see it."
Background:
Created by Veterans of the Southern Freedom Movement (1951-1968) and hosted by Tougaloo College in Jackson, Mississippi, the site provides educational resources about the civil rights movement from the point of view of movement participants, especially those who were active in the South. The site also helps activists renew ties that once bound them together, find lost friends, and assist fellow movement veterans in need, while serving as a living memorial for their fallen comrades.
Outstanding Web Features:
Visitors to the site can browse the Veterans Roll Call, which includes a description of each participant's activities, updates, and/or contact information; a history and timeline that details major civil rights events between 1951 and 1968; articles, letters and reports from the field, as well as interviews and oral histories with/by activists; photo galleries; original source documents; and testimonials and memories of movement veterans who have passed away. Visitors also can read retrospectives, analyses, and opinions by movement veterans and/or join a discussion forum. Activists who have added themselves to the Veterans Roll Call are encouraged to submit materials for posting to webmaster@crmvet.org.
