Cradle to Cradle Certified Innovation Institute

Cradle to Cradle Certified Innovation Institute

Mission:
To bring about a new industrial revolution that turns the making of things into a positive force for society, the economy, and the planet.

Background:
Established in 2010 with initial funding from the Schmidt Family Foundation and the Dutch Nationale Postcode Loterij, the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute administers the Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard, an effort to transform the production of consumer products into a positive force for society and the environment. Developed by sustainable design pioneers William McDonough and Michael Braungart, the standard rates products across five quality categories — material health, material reutilization, renewable energy and carbon management, water stewardship, and social fairness. The institute also trains and accredits assessors who help companies prepare for product certification and administers the Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Registry.

Outstanding Web Features:
Visitors to the site can search the Product Registry for certified products by keyword, category, certification level, or a combination of all three, or learn more about the requirements that a product and its manufacturing process must meet to achieve each level of certification — Basic, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Visitors also can learn more about product innovation or get involved with the "Cradle to Cradle" movement by sharing ecological design solutions on a Q&A forum or supporting the institute with a donation, while corporate officials can learn about the Cradle to Cradle certification process, including product eligibility criteria and accredited assessment bodies.
