CrisisCommons
Mission:
To improve emergency management and humanitarian activities by fostering a culture of information sharing.
Background:
CrisisCommons was formed in March 2009 following a multi-stakeholder discussion about the possibility of creating a common community of citizen volunteers, crisis response organizations, international humanitarian relief agencies, nonprofits, and private sector groups working to improve the coordination and efficiency of responses to international crises. Through its CrisisCamp events and other convenings, the organization works to foster the technology-based innovations needed to unite communities, enable information sharing in all phases of an emergency, and alleviate suffering and the loss of life.
Outstanding Web Features:
The CrisisCommons Web site offers several tools, including an Oil Reporter iPhone app designed to encourage organizations to capture and share data with the public as they respond to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill; a downloadable GPS map of Haiti that provides up-to-date road data for humanitarian organizations working in that country; and a Haiti people finder to help survivors of the January 2010 quake locate loved ones. The organization also maintains a wiki as well as a blog that offers videos and updates on CrisisCommons efforts around the globe.
