Gill Foundation
Mission:
The Gill Foundation works to secure equal opportunity for all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. The mission is accomplished by providing grants to nonprofit organizations; strengthening the leadership and managerial skills of nonprofit leaders; increasing financial resources to nonprofit organizations; strengthening democratic institutions; and building awareness of the contributions people of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities make to American society.
Purpose of Site:
Recently redesigned by Interactive Applications Group (iapps), the Gill Foundation Web site provides information on the foundation, its grantmaking activities, and training resources for nonprofits. It also features news and developments in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community.
Background:
Tim Gill, founder and former chairman and chief technology officer at Quark Inc., started the Gill Foundation in 1994 after the passage of Colorado's anti-gay Amendment 2. Since its establishment, the foundation has awarded more than $21 million to LGBT and HIV/ AIDS communities, while focusing on national organizations, the non-urban United States, and Colorado. In addition to its grantmaking, the foundation operates a training and technical assistance program that has helped more than 4,000 people improve their organization's fundraising and development capability.
Home Page:
The home page of the Gill Foundation Web site has a unique design that is still quite accessible to novice Web surfers. The organization's mission is prominently displayed at the top of the page. The body of the home page is organized with links to general information about the foundation, grantmaking pages, technical assistance and training information, and donor resources on the left side of the page. On the right side are links to recent press releases from the foundation. At the bottom of the page are more links to useful pages on the site: Search, About Gill, Contact Us, and Log In.
Outstanding Feature:
The new version of the site provides a customized Web navigation experience based on a user's specified interests. To obtain a user name and password, a user can register for free with the foundation by providing information such as name, address, and professional field. The foundation then sends an automatic e-mail with the user's user name and password. By creating a profile and identifying with a group such as donor, training participant, or grantee, users are presented with relevant, customized content as they navigate the site.
Honorable Mention:
For grantseekers, the site provides an eligibility quiz in both of the grantmaking sections on the site LGBT & HIV/AIDS Grants and General Grants. The quiz is accessible under the Grant Guidelines heading and is executed through a pop-up window. Grantseekers simply answer a series of questions about their location and purpose, and the site lets them know whether they are eligible for a grant from the foundation.
With its new site, the Gill Foundation is also working to build an online community by encouraging visitors to submit success stories, job postings, and other resources. In addition, the foundation is creating an online forum where users can convene to discuss issues.
