Grantmakers in Health
Mission:
To help foundations and corporate giving programs improve the nation's health, to foster communication and collaboration among grantmakers and others, and to help strengthen the grantmaking community's knowledge, skills, and effectiveness.
Background:
Formally launched in 1982, Grantmakers in Health is a national resource on and for health philanthropy, with annual support from more than 200 funders. GIH provides issue-focused forums, workshops, and large annual meetings; publications; continuing education and training; technical assistance; consultation on programmatic and operational issues; and studies of health philanthropy. The organization brokers professional relationships and connects health grantmakers with each other as well as with grantmakers in other fields whose work has important implications for health. It develops targeted programs and activities, and provides customized services on request to individual funders.
Outstanding Features:
GIH's Web site, relaunched in February 2004, was awarded a silver medal in the World Wide Web Health Awards, a program that recognizes the best health-related Web sites for consumers and professionals. Highlights of the site include sections on building effective health foundations, which addresses operational challenges; connecting policy makers and grantmakers; publications; and a calendar. Additional resources, including a database of 11,000 grants and initiatives, are available to GIH funding partners only.
